What is the difference between classical and romantic ballet?

The difference between classical ballet and romantic ballet is that romantic ballet was created in the 19th century, whereas Classical ballet was created in the 17th century. In the 18th century, women played secondary roles as dancers. They wore corsets, wigs, high heels, and hoops. Also, the difference was the music and the way they danced. In classical there were less men than in romantic ballet.

Where do you sew elastic on pointe shoes?

You sew the elastic about an inch or two apart in the heel of the shoe. It should be cut and measured around your ankle ahead of time so you know it won't be too tight or too loose.

H

______________________________________________________________________

One Elastic Band:

1) Fold the back of your pointe shoe down.

2) Mark the place where the back of the pointe shoe falls.

3) Take your elastic and place it at an angle, right where you marked.

4) Stretch the elastic to the other side, where your other marking is.

5) Sew the elastic in place with enough "extra" on each side (this will keep the back of the shoe on your heel).

Two Elastic Bands (Crisscrossed):

1) Place the pointe shoe on your foot.

2) About 1-1.5 inches from the heel, sew one end of the band.

3) Stretch the elastic across the top of the foot to a place on the shoe a little closer to the toes (about 2-2.5 inches from the heel).

4) Sew the end of the elastic there.

5) Repeat on the other side, starting at the end on the back and moving it forward.

6) It should look like an "X" on the top of your foot.

Why do ballerinas have curved feet?

Ballerinas do not necessarily have curved feet. It all depends on the dancer's tendu (i.e foot being pointed). Some dancers have naturally strong and flexible toes and feet, while others have to work to improve their arches in the feet.

If you wanted to go on to Pointe, you would have to have extremely strong feet and a good arch. If you want, try this: Point your toes and then you will see that everyone has curved feet, it's just that ballerinas have more developed feet. :)

I hope that helps answer your question!

Where in the world is pointing your shoes at people rude?

It isn't rude because the people who point at your shoes are rather jealous of your shoes or don't want to point at your face like if they say NOW TELL ME WHERE DID SHE GO! And they point at your feet its just plain weird sometimes!

Can you do ballet if you are 14 years old?

Yes, you can start ballet at any age. However, you may want to, if you have not already, learn the positions of the arms and feet as well as perhaps some basic movements such as plies. This should give you a strong base. Look on the internet or books such as The Young Dancer: A Young Enthusiast's Guide to Ballet.

Are ballet clothes uncomfortable?

Yes

To some people they are - for example a tutu might be a bit itchy because of the tulle.

Leotards and tights, however, (providing they are the right size) are made of comfortable stretchy materials.

Either way, once you get used to wearing ballet gear, it may very well begin to feel like a second skin.

How do you improve your arch for ballet?

I have extremely low arches. I try to do the following exercises everday:

Start off with the easy ones.

I do tendu exercises, degage exercises, and rond de jambe exercise at the barre just to warm up. You can also just to feet exercises, like rolling your ankles, etc. Next, face the barre or anything resembling a barre. Plie in first position. Roll up into forced arch. As you stretch your knees to releve, you want to focus on keeping your heels in the same place as they were in forced arch. Reverse this by starting off in releve, going into forced arch, plie, and stretch. Repeat 5 to 10 times.

Next I lightly stretch my feet.

One foot at a time, you take one hand and place it on the bottom of your heel. You take the other hand and place it on the top of your toes. You lightly push your toes down, while pushing your heel up. Hold this for 15 seconds and repeat 10 times each foot.

Then form the arch.

If your feet are weak, do this exercise sitting. If your feet are strong, do this exercise standing. The exercise is called doming. Place your feet on the floor, whether you're sitting or standing. Lift your ankle bones and try to form a higher arch. Hold this for 10 seconds and repeat 15 to 20 times.

After, USE THERA BANDS.

Not only are thera bands for strengthening, but they will make your arch more flexible. Do exercises, such as simply pointing and flexing your foot with the Thera Band wrapped around your metatarsals.

Not only do you want to stretch, but you want to strengthen.

Simply place pencils or marbles on the floor. Pick up the items using just your toes. Repeat 20 times each foot.

In between these exercises, roll a tennis ball under your foot.

NEVER place your toes under a couch and stretch your knees. This is extremely dangerous and could be harmful. If you feel you need more than just these exercises, there are certain foot stretching products. I purchased the Ballet Foot Stretch and highly recommend it. It is expensive, but worth it. Because of the price, you should be serious about ballet when purchasing this product. It is specifically made for ballerinas and is safe because you control the stretch. Here's a link to learn more: footstretch.com. If you decide to purchase this product, make sure to use it once your warm and after the exercises listed above. I warn you to not expect this product for a month after ordering. I started to get worried, so I made an international call to Spain, where it is made. They explained that each device is hand made to your foot size and may not be shipped for a month.

Remember your feet are only one part of your body. Do not focus on them in class or you may start to forget and lose technique in the rest of your body. Just remember to point, do not sickle, and wing when necessary. Your foot's arch will develop with age, as well. Continue to do these exercises, but be aware of your body and not just feet in class. In the end, companies will accept you for your technique and not for your arch!
