Cutting it down will NOT kill it. Believe me, I tried. What worked for me was cutting it down as far as possible, hollowing out a two inch by two inch hole in the center of the trunk and pouring Roundup into the hole. Within a week or so, the Roundup will seep into the hole and kill the root. Digging it up, well, that`s a whole other story. The roots are very tenacious and don`t come out easily. Hope this helps.
