Have an autographed baseball trying to find player?

The easiest thing to do would be to post a picture of the signed baseball on a baseball collectors forum and hope someone can help you identify the signature. You can also do some detective work, and narrow down the possibilities then research the baseball online looking for images of the same signature.

The origin of the baseball might help figure out what team the player that signed the baseball was on. Trace the baseball as far back as possible to the city of it's origin, or to where you found the baseball. Once you have figured out what city the baseball originated from find the closest Major League team to that city. If the baseball was found in New York for example the possibilities could be both the Mets, and the Yankees but it could also be from the older teams that have left New York like the Dodgers, and the Giants so the age of the baseball might be important as well.

If the baseball that the signature is on is an official Major League baseball check the name of the league president. This will help date the baseball, and might help determine what era the player signature is from. Now with this info try to figure out at least the initials of the player.

Once you have an idea of the players initials take the information for example: initials "BR" Now start your research for a player with the first name starting with "B" the last name starting with "R" from a team playing in the city of New York, signed on a Joe Cronin American League baseball. Taking note that the length of the name is too long to be Babe Ruth, and the baseball was made after Babe Ruth passed away you can rule him out. Bobby Richardson could be a possibility. Do a search on line for players that played for New York teams, list them and start searching for single signed baseballs for each name until you find a matching image.

If you have no luck then the player might be from another team. Baseball-almanac (Link below) has a complete all time list of Major League players from A-Z look for possibilities and start the search again using as many letters in the name as possible. Baseball-Almanac also has team rosters year by year.

How much is a roger maris 1958 baseball card worth?

A Roger Maris signed baseball card is worth between $300.-$500. Value is based on average prices of recently closed auctions. Prices may vary based on condition, and the type of authenticity that accompanies the signature. Signatures that have not been properly authenticated could sell at half the market value or less. Add for inscriptions. In a recent auction (2008) a Roger Maris signed 1976 diamond Jubilee card sold for $358.50 in 2007 a signed 1968 Topps Roger Maris baseball card #330 sold for $310.70 Collectible items could add value to the price of a signature but not always. As in the case of a baseball card, generally collectors of baseball cards would rather have a baseball card without the signature. The signature would be considered as a flaw in the condition of the card and will lower the value.

A collector of signatures will not always pay extra for the "collectible" baseball card. The autograph collectors main concern is displaying the signature. This is why it is not a good idea to have an expensive baseball card signed. You could devalue the price of the card, and get less for it.

Once a collectible baseball card is signed the value of the card dramatically goes down as a collectible. The card then becomes an Item to display the signature. The bulk of the value relies on the value of the signature of the player that signed the card, and how well the card displays the signature.

What is the estimated value of a 1974 ball autographed by the entire Cincinnati Reds baseball team?

A 1977 Cincinnati Reds team signed baseball with the key signatures: Anderson, Rose, Bench, Concepcion, Morgan, Foster, Griffey, and Seaver is worth about $300.-$450. Value is based on average prices of recently closed auctions. Prices may vary based on condition, and the type of authenticity that accompanies the baseball. Prices may also vary based on the amount of signatures, and key signatures acquired. The more complete the baseball with key signatures the more valuable. In two recent auctions; a 1975 World Champions, Cincinnati Reds team signed baseball sold for $1,667. and $2,954. World Championship team baseballs typically sell for more money. The "Big Red Machine" of the 1970s will always sell at a higher price as well. the 1977 team is right at the edge of this era ending about 1978. With many of the key players of the "Machine" still on this ball I'm sure the price of the 1977 Reds will rise. In fact I think Perez is the only key signature of the "Machine" missing. Collectors that can't handle the high price of the most sought after 1975 baseball will start spending money on the lesser priced baseballs surrounding 1975 driving the price up. It won't take long for the prices to go up, if it hasn't happened already. If the Reds put together a couple of winning years, or win a championship this process will quicken as it will rekindle interest in the older baseballs. The price stated above could double in no time. You may find prices for team signed baseballs on my website. The team signed baseball price guide includes a list of key players as well as links to full team rosters year by year. I will provide a link on this page for your convenience. Prices will be updated as auction results dictate so check back soon.

1961 cardinals autographed baseball?

1951 St. Louis Cardinals scorecard

A 1951 St. Louis Cardinals scorecard/program is worth about $20.-$30. in excellent - near/mint condition.

As with all collectibles, condition is the most important factor of all providing that the item is authentic. With programs/scorecards the slightest flaws will bring the price down significantly. An exceptional mint condition scorecard could sell for more.

Common flaws would be staining, foxing (yellowing), fading, creases, rips, loose pages, cracked binding, and writing on the cover. Un-scored programs will generally sell at a higher price than a scored program but sometimes it doesn't effect value. The over all condition, and how well the cover displays will.

Who are the best authenticators of baseball memorabilia currently?

An autograph that is not authenticated by a creditable company could sell at half the market value or less. Two of the top, and most trusted authenticators are PSA/DNA, and James Spence Authentic (JSA). Collectors will pay more for signatures authenticated by either one. It may sound odd but in some cases PSA/DNA, and JSA authenticated signatures may sell higher than a Letter of authenticity from an unknown or less trusted authenticator that witnessed the signing even though PSA/DNA, and JSA did not. It's just a matter of collectors trust, and collectors will pay more for it.

Check the respective websites Show Schedule to see if they will be in the area that you live. They also do business through the mail. If you did not acquire the signatures yourself, or are not sure of its origin, do your homework. Before spending money on having the autograph authenticated find signatures on line that have been properly authenticated, and compare them to yours. If you feel comfortable that they are authentic then proceed. Try these helpful Links below for comparing signatures.

Should you shellac a baseball?

No Shellac
No. It will hurt the value of the signature. Years ago it was a common practice to shellac the baseball to protect the signatures. This practice stopped when it was realized that the balls would turn yellow, crack, and peal off. With some of the earliest signed baseballs, the value is not hurt as much as with newer balls because the autographs are more rare, and it was common.

What is a knuckleball?

Throwing a KnuckleballUsing all four fingers and thumb, grip the ball with fingertips/nails only. If your hand is large enough, use a grip that I can only describe as one you might use while pretending to be a lion and going "grrr" to a child. You pull your arm back, and then, as you bring it forward, at the time of release, you "push" the ball, releasing with all five digits at the same time. If done correctly, the ball will have no spin. Thus, the air currents take over the movement of the ball. That is why it is so hard to hit when thrown properly; it follows no consistent path/curve, but more likely moves north-south-north-south unpredictably. Speed is almost negligible; yet enough speed/force must be applied to get the ball all the way to the plate!!

Click on the 'How to Throw the Knuckleball' for more tips on throwing the knuckleball.

I thought I might add you don't "push" the ball to the plate. You throw it like any other ball. The only difference is at release point you point your fingers out to home plate. And also remember to always follow through. This pitch was not meant to be throw hard. In fact a slower arm speed is better. The slower it goes the more it moves. But make sure you throw it fast enough so it reaches the plate! Once you do it right youll always want to throw it. Trust me. I'm a knuckleballer with a 60 MPH Knuckleball and im 14! im 5 MPH behind Tim Wakefield. (Hence my name).

Wild card in baseball?

In most cases, the division winner with the best overall season record plays the wildcard team and the other two division winners play each other. But, in the case where the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record come from the same division, the division winner with the second overall best record plays the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record plays the division winner with the third best overall record. Confusing? Kinda, and kinda not really fair either, but MLB does not want two teams from the same division playing each other in the first round of the playoffs.

I have a bunch of baseball cards are they worth anything?

The value of baseball cards as with any other collectible is dictated by supply, and demand. The lower the number of items available on the market with the highest demand will have a higher value. Older baseball cards are fewer in number than today's baseball cards, and in general have a higher value. There are modern cards that have high value, that are available in high numbers but, the demand for those cards is greater than the number avalible. As time passes if collectors lose interest in these cards because of the large numbers printed the value will drop big time. The older cards in less number in time will have a better chance of holding their value longer.

How much is a Bob Welch baseball card worth?

The most expensive card of any player (typically) is the rookie year card. The value of any card is determined by its popularity which is in turn determined by the popularity of the player...note that popularity and player performance are not always tied together. You can see this phenomenon with Bob Welch cards. he won a Cy Young award and some key world series games...but he was always in the shadow of other pictures..Fernando Valenzuela...Orel Hershiser. his rookie card in mint condition might go for around 20 bucks. most of his other cards will likely go for under two dollars...maybe more if you sell them in Southern Cal.

What is the value of a ball signed by all of the 1963 Yankees including Mantle Yogi and Roger Maris?

According to the collector's price guide, "Team Baseballs," your mid-30's Yankees team-signed ball is worth between $800-1500, with value being greater or lower depending on exact year and players present - in particular, the inclusion or exclusion of Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig - plus all-important overall condition of the ball and autographs. Other key factors include type of ball (is it an "Official American League" ball?), whether there are any "clubhouse signatures" (autographs signed for players by ballboys, attendants, etc), and total number of signatures present. The authenticity of the Gehrig signature is of particular importance, as he used "ghost-signers" extensively.

Yankees memorabilia is always highly collected and these factors, plus the authenticity of the all the significant signatures are the main variables in determining value.
