Many people choose a pet based on its appearance without considering other aspects of the breed. Perhaps they think that their beagle will be like Snoopy, the loveable cartoon hound created by Charles Schultz. In addition, beagles are generally friendly, good-tempered dogs that get on well with children, adults and other dogs. However, in order to assess how a dog will function as a housepet, one must look to its background and find out why the breed was developed in the first place. Beagles are hunting hounds; they are very focused on tracking down and killing small game, such as rabbits. Their amazing sense of smell often gets them into trouble, as they race off after a scent and become lost, or worse yet, run into traffic while pursuing their prey. Hunters usually keep them in kennels, not in a house, for the dogs' own safety. Even so, beagles are clever escape artists and driven hunters; nothing short of actual restraint can keep them from their pursuit of game.

Because of their passion for hunting, beagles often don't make very good household pets. They are hard to housebreak, and on a walk will pull at the leash with excessive force, often gagging themselves. If you also have a pet cat, it could be in danger from your beagle, as the dog will invariably chase any animal that is smaller than itself. This breed is also very noisy, barking and howling with apparently little provocation, often at night. Beagles are also well-known for their huge appetites, and often get into trouble by overeating, or by consuming poisons, such as chocolate, or inedible items, such as socks.

As cute and companionable as they are, beagles are probably not a good choice for a first-time pet owner.

The term "lemon spotted" refers to the coloring of the fur on the beagle. Typically it means That it is blonde. A lemon spotted beagle IS a normal beagle. IT's no different than some one being blonde, brunette, or red maybe you are refering to a tri colored beagle as normal.

As far as I can find, No U.S.A. state has the beagle as its state dog. Pennsylvania almost chose the beagle, but opted for the Great Dane instead.
