Bedbugs

Do bed bugs live in foam mattresses like Tempur-Pedic?

It is not the mattress that gets bedbugs but the bed. Bedbugs are attracted to a sleeping person in a bed. Once a bedbug has had a blood meal off somebody sleeping in that bed they will normally find a hiding place as close as possible to that bed which may or may not be in the mattress. It could be in the sheets, the bed construction, the floor, the walls or furniture or books near the bed. Bed bugs can be kept at bay with mattress protectors.

Does everyone have an allergic reaction to brown recluse spider bites?

No, not everyone has an allergic reaction to the bite of the brown recluse spider. In fact most people don't have an allergic reaction. But people do react to the venom the spider injects. It's powerfully toxic and can pose a deadly threat in young children or the older or infirm. Certainly if someone has an allergic reaction to the venom in addition to the effects of the toxins, this will complicate medical treatment and make the bite a much more serious threat to life.

Can naptha be used for bed bugs?

Yes, it can - but you must take serious safety precautions when using it. The suggested amount is one gallon for each 750 cubic feet of space. The room must be sealed tight to prevent the vapor from leaking out. You'll want to focus on areas where the bed bugs are known to congregate - baseboards and skirting, etc (you can use a baster or syringe to get into those areas more efficiently). You need to wear a proper mask with the appropriate filters while applying the naptha. The warmer you can make the room prior to application, the better. You want to try for at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, if possible. Give the room time to heat adequately, including the walls and ceiling. Before application of the naptha, ensure that there are no open flames - extinguish any fireplaces, furnaces, or other sources of heat. Spray from the top-down - starting with roofing space above the room, if necessary. After application, the room should be left for about 24 hours before ventilating. At that point, simply opening a window for about half an hour is sufficient, as the naptha will dissipate quickly. You'll want to allow the room to continue to ventilate for at least another day, to ensure that there is no concentration remaining. But the room will be safe for re-entry around the 30 minute mark.

How do you stop or kill very small gnat-like bugs called see-ums which have females that bite that are in your pool?

NO-SEE-UMS. What a royal pain. They dont live in water, they fly in the air. The best thing to do is get a outside fogger/sprayer and spray the entire area. This will kill all the flying insects. They are called no see ums because they are the same color as skin. Insect spray can work as well as baby oil. Both will deter or kill them.

How long can a bed bug live with one drop of blood?

Depends on the sort. Newly hatched bedbugs are called nymphs and they need to have had five moults and five different meals of somebody's blood to become adults. If they do not get these within a week or two nymphs may well not survive.

But adult bedbugs can survive for a year or more between feeds. So just one extraction of your blood while you were asleep on one night is enough to enable that bedbug to remain alive for over a year after that meal. But in practice once that bedbug has enjoyed that one meal off you in that bed it is far more likely it will come back to enjoy more of your delicious blood every few nights thereafter giving you more itchy marks on your limbs, until you have found it and killed it.

Do bed bugs live in stereo equipment?

Yes bedbugs might possibly live and breed in stereo equipment, if that is somewhere near to a bed in which some person (or persons) sleeps. But stereo equipment or a radio or computer equipment or a television set are merely one of a large number of possibilities which bedbugs may adopt as their day time "hiding place".

It is equally possible their hiding place might be under clutter, (such as clothing strewn around an untidy bedroom), in the furniture near the bed such as a cupboard or chest of drawers, under the carpet, in a holdall or other luggage, in or under the floorboard, in cracks or crevices in the bed structure, in bedroom's walls, or very commonly inside the mattress or in the mattress folds of the bed.

Essentially bedbugs spend day-times in any one of these or other possible hiding place where it is dark during day. So your stereo equipment just might or might not be such a location depending on its design and its ease of access for the bedbug to crawl inside after completion of its meal. Female bedbugs also lay their eggs and stick them on hard surfaces, which might possibly also be found in stereo equipment or in any one of the numerous other possible bedbug hiding places near your bed.

They only emerge from their hiding place during hours of darkness to find food, their meal then being the blood of a human asleep in the bed. After its meal each bedbug then returns to either the same hiding place it came out of, or somewhere else where it is dark daylight hours in the bedroom. The female bedbugs may lay 5 or more eggs each there, which in time hatch and so may create a larger and larger bedbug infestation each day in that home, if nothing is done to locate and exterminate the infestation by those living in that home.
