What is the difference between a billiard table and a pool table?

All three are different kinds of cue games: Billiards, Pool, and snooker.

Billiard tables have larger pockets and use slightly larger balls than snooker. Other than that the tables are very similar in size and design. The smaller snooker balls are red, and yellow with white cue balls. They are not numbered like billiard balls and the game is entirely different than say 8 or 9 ball played in the USA. A billiard table can be converted to snooker because you can make the holes smaller to accommodate the snooker balls, but not vice-versa.

In snooker you keep score and after all the balls are potted it is the one with the highest score that wins. 147 is the maximum score but theoretically 155 is possible. With billiards an infinite score is theoretically possible. In pool it is ho pots all their balls and the black first that wins.

No one knows exactly who, when or where the first billiard table was built. The earliest documented record of a billiard table was made in 1470. What is billiard cloth made of? Amazingly, the main component of billiard cloth has remained unchanged for over 400 years. Wool was used in the 1500's, and remains the fabric of choice today. It has, of course, undergone some perfecting (and some wool/nylon blends are also produced).

Tables originally had flat vertical walls for rails and their only function was to keep the balls from falling off. They resembled riverbanks and even used to be called "banks". Players discovered that balls could bounce off the rails and began deliberately aiming at them. Thus a "bank shot" is one in which a ball is made to rebound from a cushion as part of the shot.

The first woman who won in World Billiard Champion was actually a man.

The billiard game was outlawed for many years and in different countries: still at the early days of billiard, the game was accused of being immoral. No, you are not allowed to move the cue ball anywhere on the pool table. According to the rules of the game, the cue ball must be played from a specific spot on the table. If the cue ball is accidentally moved off the head string, it must be placed back on the head string before the next shot.

What is the highest possible score in one shot in snooker?

The question as phrased does not limit the points to one break. At the end of a frame, with the addition of various fouls and free balls, the total SCORE for a player, can be higher than 162(the 155 maximum break and the 7 points received for the opponent hitting/potting the black when playing a red). This score could include various foul shots and other breaks.

In theory there is no limit to the amount someone can score in a break of snooker. It would depend on the relative playing skills of the two players. A very good player might get a very high score (multiple snookers, foul shots, breaks) against a poor opponent.

If a player begins with a foul shot and leaves the opponent snookered on all reds, the opponent then may select a 'free ball'. They may then pot it as a red and then pot the black, then reds and blacks, and all the colours. Their break would be 155 .This is the maximum BREAK in snooker.

Why is pool table felt green?

There are 2 schools of thought on that question, the most popular being that it was to simulate the color of grass (where the game finds a lot of its origins), the second was it was simply cheaper to make in that color.

Recent studies show that 'green' is actually easier on the eye which allows you to play longer without eye strain, and some claim it helps with your depth of vision (needed for long shots).

In the end, in a modern sense at least, it is more preference than anything.

Edit 2/27/10

The most recent development by DuPont shows that a light blue color gives the best vision of the balls on the table. Simonis brought this to market with their Tournament Blue color cloth. Historically, Green was the only color until mills started adding colors to meet consumer demand. Some cloth manufacturers now offer 20 or more cloth colors.

What is the best shape for a pool cue?

There are many brands. In pretty much any brand $200-$300 will get you a quaility cue. Most of the more expensive cues are made the same as cheaper cues it's just the materials used in, and the amount of inlays(designs), generally just looks. One of the most popular brands is McDermott. Their plain classic cues are around $300 and range up to custom one offs that are $4000-$5000, wide variety good place to start.

You also need to think about your style of gameplay. Finesse shooters and power shooters will have totally different tastes in types of cues. Not only is there a cue to choose, but also tip, joint, wrap, taper, etc. Also as you play and adapt to new techniques, your tastes may change. All in all, there is no "best" pool cue: this is the type of game where everything is all about you.

It all depends on personal taste, budget & style of play.

Inducted 1995

CISERO MURPHY: Born to a Brooklyn, New York family in 1937, James Cisero Murphy was the first and only African-American ever to win a world or U.S. national billiard title. He started by taking the New York City championship at age 16. How do you fix the broken pockets on a pool table?

Unless the hole is in the upper section of a rail, the cloth must be replaced. There is no repair method that can be performed that has no effect on table play.

If you aren't concerned with this, you can remove small sections of felt from inside the pockets, cut into very small fibers and mix a 50-50 water-glue mix (Elmer's Glue All works for this). This can be smoothed into a small area for a temporary patch - it must be pressed by placing wax paper over it with a flat weight (a very heavy book as an example).

How do you play nine ball pool?

The game uses 10 balls; the 1 through 9 balls, plus the cue ball. Any number of players can play, but typically only two players play.

The setup:

The numbered balls are arranged in a four-sided 'diamond formation' with the 1 ball up front and on the spot and the 9 ball in the center of the formation. The arrangement of the other balls is not important. To see a proper starting formation, click on the RELATED LINK below.

The first shooter 'breaks' the formation when he shoots the cue ball from behind the foul line and hits the 1 ball. If any numbered ball except the 9 ball sinks, the player shoots again. If the 9 ball is sunk on the break, that player wins, and a new game is set up.

The object is to sink the 9 ball. Trick is to accomplish this by hitting the lowest numbered ball on the table with the cue ball first.

Failure to hit the lowest numbered ball first is a foul, and the opponent then gets 'ball in hand' which means he can place the cue ball anywhere in the table top he wants in preparation for his shot. Sinking the cue ball in a pocket is also a foul, with the same penalty.

The shooting player gets to continue shooting as long as he doesn't foul and if he sinks any numbered ball on each shot. If the player fouls or if he fails to sink a numbered ball, the shot passes to the next player.

The player who sinks the 9 ball without a foul on the shot wins the game.
