The Black Mamba is the longest Venomous Snake in Africa. It averages around 2.5 to 3.2 meters (8 to 10 feet) in length. Large Mamba's can grow upto 4.4 meters (14.6 feet) in length. It is called the Black Mamba because of the black color of its mouth. It is also the fastest snake in the world reaching speeds of around 16 to 20 kmph.

I would venture to say that most Black Mamba's don't travel at 10-12 mph as most humans don't run 23mph, unless you are Usain Bolt. That being said if you are in decent shape you should be able to outrun a black mamba.

Black Mamba's are ambush & stealth hunters. Once they bite their prey, there is no escape. The venom kills its prey swiftly. Their usual prey includes birds and small mammals like hyraxes, rodents like rats, bats, small chicken, bushbabies etc. They are even known to eat other snakes like the Puff Adder or the Cape Cobra. Once the prey is dead, they swallow them whole. Mamba's have no predators that are known to kill or eat the snake.

The maximum amount of venom a black mamba has been known to release at a time is 400 mg. The dose that is lethal to 50% of humans is 0.28 mg/kg of body weight. A 150 lb or 72 kg human would have a 50% chance of dying if injected with 20 mg of venom. Black mambas on average inject 100 to 120 mg of venom in a single bite, which, without venom, kills nearly 100% of people.

Black Mambas breed only once a year. Breeding season is in Spring which is around the month of September. Eggs develop for around 60 days inside the female. After that, the female seeks a suitable place (like an abandoned termite mound) to lay its eggs. Around 15 to 25 eggs are laid and guarded aggressively by the Mother. Eggs incubate for around 60 days before hatching. The young ones are about 50 cms in length at birth and are totally independent. They hunt and feed for themselves right from day one. They are also venomous at birth. Though their venom is as toxic as the adults, the quantity is much lower.

Chipmunks are primarily solitary animals, they come together to breed and after a gestation period of one month, two to eight young are born in the underground nest chamber.

Chipmunks live in underground burrows that can be up to 6 feet long and 2 to 3 feet deep. Burrow entrances are often overlooked and difficult to find because no soil is piled up and the entrance can be concealed with leaves and other debris. A burrow system usually has more than one entrance and usually includes a nest chamber (up to 12 inches in diameter) lined with leaves and a food-storage chamber that can hold 9 gallons of food.

The venom of Black Mamba is both a myotoxin and a hemotoxin which can quickly cause muscle tremors, affects breathing, and destroys red blood cells. These snakes can easily be 8-10 feet long and can travel along the ground in an upright position of about a meter in height. People who have been bitten can easily be struck in the chest and neck area which in turn can cause quick convulsions and death. Medical treatment asap with an anti-venom is an absolute necessity.

The Black Mamba gets its name - from the colour of the lining of the inside of its mouth. The overall colour of the snake's skin is olive green - but - the inside of its mouth is jet black.
