Loft is the period during which a bowling ball is falling through the air before landing on the lane.
In general, excessive loft is undesirable, as the force of a heavy bowling ball landing hard will leave a small indentation, even on today's synthetic lanes. Excessive loft also usually means that the ball was (accidentally or deliberately) thrown rather than rolled, which is bad bowling form.
On very rare occasions, almost always having to do with extremely dry lane conditions, an experienced bowler may find that they have to launch the ball forward with excessive speed, in order to reduce the ball's uncontrollable hook and have any chance of scoring well. This is known as 'lofting the ball'.
(But even experienced bowlers never let the ball land more than 15 feet out on the lane; and they release it from as close to the ground as possible to minimize any potential damage to the lane's surface.)
Loft is distinguishable from lift; the latter is the amount of sideways spin you impart on the ball with your fingers, in the split second after your thumb has come out of the thumb hole and before you release the ball completely.
Why is a turkey so called in ten-pin bowling?
The name turkey in ten-pin bowling started in the nineteenth century when the owner of the bowling alley would give a live turkey to a bowler making three strikes in a row during the days just before Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The normal term is lane conditioner. In the early days of bowling, oil conditioner was applied to the lane as a barrier to protect the surface from damage over years of use.
As lacquer, polyurethane and synthetic surfaces became more popular, oil became part of the sport, much like how grass is grown and cut in golf courses.
How does wrist strengtheners wrist supports and gloves help you play bowling?
While one might not think of it, the wrist plays a very important role in how comfortable the grip of the bowling ball feels. When you grip anything the muscles in the wrist work to help. After bowling two or three games in a league or open bowling, and placing your fingers in the bowling ball and gripping it 30-50 times, the wrist can become tired and fatigued. A strong wrist and/or supports/gloves can help the wrist withstand the wear and tear gripping a bowling ball does to it, along with making the bowler feel more comfortable while bowling. Click on the 'Bowling Wrist Support' link below to read an article about supports and see links to other articles concerning bowling.
A string is a series of either strikes or spares in a row. In order for it to be a string, there must be more that three in the game. Given that there are only ten frames, a string will add substantially to your score because of the additive nature of the scoring.
For instance, three spares will add much higher than three open frames because one spare will add the next count of pins in the next frame. A strike will add two counts of pins, so a string will make a cumulative score. This is how 300 is a perfect game.
