What is the missing number from the sequence 10.8 5 8 9.33 8 5.67?

If the numbers are written with commas to separate them we have: 10.8, 5, 8, 9.33, 8, 5.67 The most rudimentary pattern seems to be the repetition of the number 8, which occurs every second number, save after the first. By placing 8 after the first number we have established a simple pattern: 10.8, 8, 5, 8, 9.33, 8, 5.67

A man is walking and comes to a fork in the road 1 pathway leads to heaven and 1 to hell there are 2 people standing there 1 always lies and 1 always tells the truth you can ask 1 question what is it?

You could ask the person that "What would the other person answer if I ask him the road to heaven". Whatever the answer or the road he points to, take the other road.

Case 1: If you ask the one who always speaks the truth, he would say that the other community guy would lie and show you the wrong road.

Case 2: If you ask the one who always lies, he would lie and say that the truthful person would choose the one that is the wrong road as well.

So, in either case, the road either person would show you is the wrong road, so take the other road.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

A Way Around It (that probably would not work):

The 2 people do not know you and you know that one always lies and the other always tells the truth. Ask them both a question to which neither one could know the truth and the answer must be a "yes" or "no", such as, "Do you know what really, really irritates me?" or "Do you know the name of my first pet?"

The one that always lies, not knowing the answer, would lie and say "Yes", while the one that always tells the truth would say "No". Having determined which is the liar and having used your only question, you say (not ask a question because you were only allowed one question, but the riddle said nothing about non-questions), "Point to the road to Heaven." The one you know is the liar will point to the road to Hell and the honest one will point to the road to Heaven - the road you will follow.

It's better to use propositional calculus even if it seems more complex cos then you'd be able to solve the puzzle even when there's only 1 person at the crossroad ...

Suppose

Statement Letter A means : The left path leads to heaven

Statement Letter B means : You are a truth teller

Now let's build a truth table, representing the answer to the propositional question , which should be True whenever the left road leads to heaven and False otherwise ...

A B

F F | F*

F T | F

T F | T*

T T | T

* We should be very careful when B is False because this means that the person is a liar and our truth answers will get inversed. So to make up for that, we modify the table to get something like :

A B

F F | T

F T | F

T F | F

T T | T

Now by using our knowledge of CNF ( Conjunctive Normal Form) we get

((¬ A) (¬ B)) (A B ) which means

You are not a truth teller and the left path does not lead to heaven, or you are a truth teller and the left path leads to heaven ?

Hasn't anyone here ever seen Labyrinth?

"Would the other person say this (say, the left road, for instance) is the road to Heaven?"

It doesn't matter which person you ask, or whether they're lying or telling the truth; if they say "no", it's the road to Heaven; if they say "yes", it's the road to Hell.

---

* This is based on the Liar's Paradox and is asked and answered several times in other questions.

Oh come on people - the answer is quite simple really.

Just ask yourself - what's neither in heaven nor in hell? By asking yourself that it becomes obvious really fast that you can't really say for certain what exactly is in heaven OR hell. The only thing you really know that'll be in either place is...(drumroll)

The people you used to know!

Now it's quite obvious that everyone you ever saw or heard of will NOT be at one place. Some loved ones, people you admired, people you looked up to, even though you'd like to have all of them in one place...

When all is said and done,

Not all will be at one.

So ask the riddler, ask the face

Only Truth will sadly tell,

Crack the mask of burning hell,

And lead you to the holy place

If you have 9 balls and one is heavier than the rest how to pinpoint the heavy one by using the balance only once?

The way to pinpoint the heaviest ball is as follows:

1 - Split the balls into three groups of three balls each.

2 - First use of the scale: Weigh any two groups against each other.

3 - If the groups weigh the same then the heavier ball is in the third group, otherwise it is in the group that weighs more.

4 - We now know that the heavy ball is one of three.

5 - Second use of the scale: Using the group of balls that we know contains the heavy ball, weigh any two balls against each other.

6 - If one of the balls is heavier then we have our answer. If the balls weigh the same then the third ball is the heavy one and we again have our answer.

Similar structures that related species inherited from a common ancestor?

Phylogenetics, or the study of the relationships between organisms, is now almost entirely done based on genetic sequences. This requires, of course, a gene common to all organisms, and one of the first universal trees of life derived from genetic information used the small subunit ribosomal RNA (ssrRNA) to show that the last universal common ancestor (LUCA) existed somewhere at the origin of bacteria and archea, with the eukaryotes (which includes all animals) branching off of the archea later in time.

Apart from phylogenetics, however, the universality of the genetic code, the prevalence of L-stereoisomers of amino acids and the ubiquity of adenosine in biochemical processes all suggest either a common ancestor or a group of very similar ancestors as the origin to all modern life.

How do you factor squares of binomials?

You should factor a2 - 9 and 4a2 - 4a + 1 by using certain algebraic properties listed below. First: (x + y)(x - y)=x2 - y2 Second: (x - y)(x - y)=x2 - 2xy + y2 So to factor a2 - 9 you use the first property to determine it is (a + 3)(a - 3). To factor 4a2 - 4a + 1 you use the second property to get (2a - 1)(2a - 1).

Why do people have names?

Last names began differently than they are today. When a person was born centuries ago he/she were identified by where they lived. An example of that was da Vinci. He was from Vinci, Italy. People also got last names from the jobs they did. A person in Germany named Wasserman would be a water man someone who took care of the water, or in England a Clark would be a clerk. In many cases last names also identified that they were the son or daughter of a particular family. The usage of a von in a name was telling others they were of a particular family or place. Many people changed names because of war or spelling problems. Schmit became Smith.
