Bruises (contusions)

Bruises are formed when an impact on the skin breaks capillaries and causes bleeding into skin tissue while the skin does not break. Bruises change color over time as the body begins to heal itself. In most cases, it takes a bruise about 2 weeks to repair itself.

What are bumps on the back of my skull that has become increasingly painful over the past few weeks it feels like a bruise but it's not and can I treat it with ice and what could it be?

I am not a doctor but a few things I thought of is migraine headaches and high blood pressure. These can cause pain at the back of the head. If neither applies I would certainly ask my primary care physician to see a Neurologist or, at least, an opthomologist to see if he/she can determine if there is something that can be detected in the eye. A neurologist might suggest an MRI to see if there are any tumors or aneurysm. That is extreme but I certainly wouldn't ignore these painful bumps.

Can you leave a bruise when you spank your child?

What if you don't spank that hard but still leave a bruise because the child's sensitive skin?

I'm not a counselor. However, a lot on the subject spanking is laden with bias. You can get a bruise without even feeling it if your mind is on something else. Bruising is a manifestation that blood vessels have broken beneath the skin resulting in internal bleeding. However, that doesn't prove cruel or an unreasonable amount of force caused that. That's an assumption by those wanting a bright line test to provide evidence against people who spank their kids.

Bright line evidence makes a simple case. However, it's unfair to assign so much meaning to such proof when an association of bruises with a specific amount of force has never been correlated to my knowledge. Then, we have to figure out the amount of force that's unacceptable. Here's where uncertainty should favor the parent who is really trying to discipline their child.

That said, you can use too much force when spanking a child and there are cruel people who spank in anger rather than in patient discipline. There is an amount of bruising that's unacceptable. However, I don't think light bruising is the definitive proof of child abuse that some would make it out to be.

How can a bruise be cured?

A bruise, or a contusion, is usually a minor hermatoma (localized collection of blood outside the blood vessels) of tissue in which capilleries and sometimes venules are damaged by trauma, allowing blood to seep into the surrounding interstitial tissues. Bruises can involve capillaries at the level of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and bone. Sometimes a bruise is caused by an internal trauma. Sometimes bruises can be serious, leading to other more life-threatening forms of hematoma.

Treatment for light bruises is minimal and may include RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), painkillers, and, later in recovery, light stretching exercises. Very gentle massage of the area and application of heat may encourage blood flow and relieve pain although causing additional pain may indicate the massage is exacerbating the injury.

Why after embalming does bruises and bumps appear?

When a person dies, the blood settles to the lowest part of the body. Since we lay people on their backs, that means blood goes to the posterior or back side--spine, back, back of head, back of arms, buttocks, back of legs, heels, etc. Anywhere the person is touched roughly or hit, those areas can bruise very easily where blood has pooled. If a person received traumas just before death, bruising will show up after they die. For example, if strangled, the blood vessels were squeezed in the next, so the coroner might see actual finger or hand marks as bruises, left by the murderer's actions. Otherwise, a deceased body should not have bruising, nor have numerous bruises. If a body has numerous bruises, someone either hurt the person when alive or mishandled the body after death.

Does an area of injury always bruise before swelling?

The simple answer here is no. An area of injury may bruise before, during, or after swelling. Depending on the location of the injury, the mechanism of injury, and the time of injury. If the injury is superficial in location, such as a blunt trauma to the skin overlying the thigh, it is common for bruising to occur in conjunction with the swelling. However, these two injury markers are not always present together. For instance, a knee injury will often cause inflammation and swelling of the joint, without any external evidence of bruising. Generally speaking, bruising is a superficial response to injury.
