I don't know if letting it lose is such a good idea. Maybe talk to a veternarian.

I had the same problem 6 months ago with my rat. Our vet at the time had been waiting on a meds shipment, so he gave me an alternative suggestion. A product called Nutri-cal is designed for dogs who are underweight due to finicky eating habits. It is loaded with vitamins, calories and fat grams. You can get it from any pet store, just make sure you only give your rat a very small amount at a time, once a day. My rat was finally getting some weight after about a week and a half. You can also give rats small amounts of dog food- which is tasty, healthy, and high in fat. Also maybe once a week I give mine a french fry, a bit of scrambled egg, or a tiny peanut butter sandwich.(PB has no cholesterol)

From what I read their differences can be from bone growth, genetic origin, and also from their habits.

I have two pet rats they're sisters, one is always active and is smaller, the other spends a lot more time sleeping and hording food. Other than that hope this helps! Like what is said above, I have two girls and one is smaller and sleeps more, one is larger and more muscular and is more active. It really just depends. Like all humans have different metabolisms and are taller and shorter than eachother, rats are different in size, muscle amounts, etc. too.

Anyways, you should think for yourself on this point because having mice in your room can get a bit smelly seeing as they excrete fairly frequently. If you want to have "clean" mice, you'll have to have a fairly large cage so the faeces can be a little bit distributed and the mouse itself won't get dirty, and you'll have to clean it once every two days.

But if you want to convince her let her know that they spend a huge part of the day grooming themselves, biting things off their fur with their fine teeth and using their little hands to wash their faces and every other part of their body, including their tail (which is fun to watch). I haven't been able to do this since you have to start when you first get them, but I'd recommend perhaps looking up this more, I bet it will help you convince your mom if you tell her you can potty train them! I've often done this simple trick to convince people that mice are actually pretty clean: I take one of my mice and smudge a little mud on their fur, then set them back in their cage and immediately they start grooming and washing the mud off, and don't stop until it's gone. Even if you just wet your hands and ruffle their fur the wrong way they will comb it back into place with their teeth. If you like, show her this article. (Oh, and I have some advice. DONT get one of your mice near water deeper than an inch, I've had once drown before, and when you first get mice they may bite you or other mice, don't worry they will usually get used to you. Sophie, my sweetest, gentlest mouse now, once bit me with all her might and launched savage attacks against the mice. On the other hand, Ghost, a nervous, jumpy, aggressive mouse has fought with other mice but has never bitten a person before. They can be confusing. But once you gain their trust, I mean REALLY gain their trust, it is extremely rare that they will ever bite you again unless poked and pestered a lot. Or you may be extra lucky and get a mouse that just doesn't bite anyone, you or other mice.
