Quite honestly you can feed them almost anything but a good diet is important if you want to keep your rat or mouse healthy for a long time. Most of the stuff at petstores is pretty bad - poor nutrients and mostly filler.

There are also many good lab blocks available by order or at various feedstores. One is the best (imho) is Harlan Tekland, but there are other brands like Mazuri, and Regal Rat that are readliy available at feedstores.

Some people also feed rats dog food with low protein (try to keep the protein under 20% you can find these by looking at Lite formulas) - one good recommendation is Holistique Blendz Adult Dog Food.

There are several reasons I can think of, but as I find your question a bit vague, I don't know if any of this applies to your mice. The first and most obvious thing is to make sure that you have one mouse of each gender. The male's testicles are clearly visible under its tail, while the female of course has nothing sticking out under hers. The second thing to consider is the age of your mice. They could simply be too young to mate. Female mice are sexually mature at 6 weeks, and males at around 8 weeks. Also if you just recently introduced your mice, they'll need some time to get used to each other. It's also possible that she's pregnant and you don't know it yet. The gestation period of a mouse is between 17 and 21 days. Normally your female will show a week before she gives birth, but you can't always tell that she is pregnant. I have a female that gave birth to a single baby as it was her first litter and I couldn't tell at all that she was expecting.

Well this is what I do: I take my pet rats into a room where they cannot chew anything harmful or get hurt, but make sure there is hiding places, and then count out loud to 15 or 20. Rats are VERY curious, so they should be out of sight somewhere.. then when you find them, give them a treat and say: "hide and seek" After a couple of weeks of practice everyday, your rat should become familiar with the term "hide and seek" and when ever you say hide and seek, they will run to a hiding place! (make sure to be consistent and keep your number that you are counting to the same!)
