Actually they got married and it appears that not long after they got married he went into the service and died. She's meeting him at the end of the isle (which is why there are flash backs of the wedding) but this time it's in a casket. Because it was probably not long after they got married that he died, she's saying that she was counting on forever with him and now that he's gone she'll never know what could have been. She had to of married him because they would not have given her his flag if she was simply his girlfriend or fiance - they would've given it to his mother then instead.
