A jester would entertain the Lord/Lady/Baron/King/Queen. They would usually do this during meal times. Jesters traditionally wear brightly coloured clothes. They would also wear a brightly coloured hat with bells on the end. Jesters did entertain during meals but whether this was the usual time depended on what type of entertainer they were who employed them. There was no tradition of wearing 'brightly' coloured clothes and wearing a cap with bells on. In fact for most of the time jesters wore normal 'court' clothes and dressed up in special clothes (but still not necessarily the well known motley or parti coloured costume with cap and bells) only during festivals or special events.
Was Edinburgh castle built onto of a old volcano?
Edinburgh History and Edinburgh Castle history begins on the rock on which Edinburgh Castle stands. The rock was formed 70 million years ago by volcanic action. Recent archaeological excavations in Edinburgh Castle have uncovered evidence that Bronze-Age man was living on the rock as long ago as 990 BC. Two thousand years ago, during the Iron Age, the rock had a hill-fort settlement on its summit. The height of the rock provided all round visibility, and its craggy nature allowed but one means of access, making the settlement easier to defend from marauders. The castle was known as Maidens Castle from about 900 BC until the late 1500's. This name may relate to Pictish maidens of royal blood being housed there, or possibly, that the rock had never been taken by force. However in 1573 at the end of the "Lange Siege"and after a barrage, where some 3000 shots were dispatched, the Castle was handed over to the English besiegers.
What is the meaning of the word portcullis?
A portcullis is a grille or gate made of wood, metal or a combination of the two. Portcullises fortified the entrances to many medieval castles, acting as a last line of defence during time of attack or siege. Each portcullis was mounted in vertical grooves in castle walls and could be raised or lowered quickly by means of chains or ropes attached to an internal winch. There would often be two portcullises to the main entrance. The one closest to the inside would be closed first and then the one furthest away. This was used to trap the enemy and often, burning wood or hot oil would be poured onto them from the roof. Also, archers could shoot arrows at the trapped enemies. There were often arrow holes in the sides of the walls for archers and crossbowman to eliminate the besieging army. A portcullis is a gate that can be lowered and raised to prevent entrance through an archway or gateway.
Why was it easier to defend a square keep castle if it had a well inside it?
If a castle is besieged, no one can get in or out. The worst shortage you could possibly have is a shortage of water. People can survive without food much longer than they can survive without water. So if you wish to survive a lengthy siege, it is very important to have a source of water that is not going to run out. Wells are good for that purpose.

How can a stone castle get attacked?
Stone castles could be attacked in many ways. Some of the most effective were using Siege Towers or a Belfry(like an enclosed ladder). These would be pushed up against the castle walls. Mining could also be used. The attackers would dig a tunnel up into the castle to a location near the walls. They would make a explosion, and this would cause the walls to crumble and collapse. Siege's were a particularly effective way of attacking a castle. The attackers would surround the castle with men, so no one could get out or in.
