Fox Terriers and Jack Russells can be great pets but they might dig up the garden so you need to decide how important that is for you. Their coats are easy to care for. Guide Dogs for the Blind retire their dogs when they are 6 and a half and they are always looking for homes for retired guide dogs. I would consider this as an excellent option because the temperament is known to be sound and at 6yrs, the dog would be expected to have several more happy years of life. Small dogs tend to bite with much less provocation than larger breeds. They also tend to bark more.
