Cats (Felines)

Cats are a type of pet first domesticated in Egypt around 2500 BC. Today, they are very popular as companion animals worldwide. Cats are independent, and are less attention demanding than other animals. They also need very little exercise and does not need to be walk daily, like the way dogs do. These qualities make them ideal pets for people who can only spend little time with their companion animals each day, and people who wants an indoor pet. In this category, there are questions containing information about cats.

How does cat urine hurt newborns?

Cat urine has ammonia in it. Some people say that the ammonia fumes can harm small children, and unborn babies (if the mother breathes in the fumes). However, there are other people who say that this is just a myth.

Even if ammonia fumes could harm small children and unborn babies...so what? The only way the child would be exposed to the fumes is if the child was cleaning out the litter box. And how many 2 year-olds clean out litter boxes?

Exposure to cat feces can also cause the disease toxoplasmosis. However, this disease is extremely rare among indoors-only cats, so, if your cat is an indoors cat, you don't need to worry about this.

What percent of cat urine is absorbed by cat litter?

Cat litter typically absorbs around 70-90% of cat urine, depending on the type and quality of the litter. Some litters are more absorbent than others due to the materials they are made of. It's important to choose a litter that effectively controls odors and keeps the litter box clean.

If a cat has a crinckled whisker can you remove it?

Old whiskers periodically fall out on their own. Pulling a whisker out, before it's ready to go, can be very painful for the cat. I would just leave the crinckled whisker alone. Having a crinckled whisker is not going to hurt the cat, but pulling it out will hurt.

If you really want to, I suppose you could clip the whisker, instead of pulling it. But that will require you to use a sharp object -- like scissors or a nail clipper -- around a squirming, un-cooperative cat's face and eyes. Which does not sound like a good idea to me.

Can male cats impregnate female rabbits?

I live in Africa, where it's very hot and it's really hard to keep rabbits. 2 of mine already died. But I have one left. All you have to do is bring them away from the mother when they're at least 8 months old, otherwise it's hard to bottle feed them with milk and you have to feed them with salads when they're at least 1 month old. You have to check them for tics and keep grooming them. Make sure that the cage is inside and make sure they have a lot of space to run around. Never let them outside and keep handling them and cut they're nails quite frequent. They lick themselves to get of the warm fur and get some shade for them. Hope this helps.

Can cats tell when people are going to die?

I'm not so sure i know that animals can sense fear........but death?! maybe....... Yes, animals can sense the death of someone they are loyal too. I've seen it with my own eyes. When my uncle was passing on his dog wouldn't leave his side even when the nurses and doctor would come the dog would refuse to move and would grow. if he was pushed to the side. The dog didn't mind someone helping his master, but he was there up until the time my uncle died. After my uncle died the dog would disappear for a day or two and my father followed the dog one day and found the dog laying across my uncle's grave. This went on for several months so my father and the rest of our family would simply bring food and water up to the dog every evening. We knew better than to remove the dog from his master's grave site. Dogs and cats can grieve as well as many other animals. Humans are ego maniacal and those that prefer to think they are of greater intelligence than their counterparts generally are so full of themselves they miss the point entirely. When you become your own biggest star and forget there is much to learn you have ceased to be intelligent. We should learn from animals and so far from what I can see the pets are winning!

What is in Friskies wet cat food?

Friskies is a supermarket brand cat food, and supermarket brand cat food is the worst food you can feed your cat. Most supermarket brands -- such as Friskies, Purina, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Tender Vittles, etc., etc. -- are made with extremely low-quality "meat." It is actually really disgusting. These brands are made with all the leftover animal parts, including ground-up chicken beaks and feet, cow eyeballs, intestines, and something called "Animal Digest." Animal digest is essentially a mishmash of leftover parts; it can include rats, roadkill animals, and animals that were euthanized at animal shelters -- including dogs and cats. That's right, cats. These brands also include something called "ash," which is burnt animal remains. It is absolutely revolting.

Luckily, there are better foods available, made with high-quality meat that is fit for human consumption. They are more expensive than supermarket brands -- up to $2 a can -- but they will keep your cat healthy, and will add years to his life. It is well worth the money to keep your beloved pet healthy and happy. And in fact, you will most likely save money in the long run: since better cat food means a healthier cat, you will save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on veterinary bills.

High-quality cat food brands are sold at most pet stores, including Petco, Pet Stop, and petnetdirect.com. Some high-quality brand names include: Innova/Evo, Weruva, Max Cat, PetGuard, California Natural, Instinct, Prairie, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Merrick, Wellness, Eagle Pack, Newman's Own, WYSONG, Precise, etc., etc.

If you really cannot afford to buy this food for your cats, then Iams brand is an acceptable second-choice. Iams is a supermarket brand, but it is of a higher quality than most supermarket brands. It's not as good as Innova/Evo, Weruva, Max Cat, etc., etc., but it is better than the other supermarket brands.

Also, although it is not strictly necessary, it is a good idea to feed your cat both wet and dry food. Wet food is more fatty than dry food, so a diet consisting of nothing but wet food can potentially cause weight problems. But more importantly, dry food helps scrape plaque off of the cat's teeth, giving him healthier teeth and gums, and better-smelling breath. My personal favorite dry food brand is Innova/Evo: most cats love it, and it makes their coat super-shiny and soft.

Also, although it is not strictly necessary, it's a good idea to give your cat some variety with his diet. Having variety in your diet is good for humans, and for cats too. Also, sometimes cats get bored eating the same thing every day. Whenever I go to Pet Stop to buy cat food, I always buy a few different flavors of each different brand, so as to give them as much variety as possible. My cats get a different wet food every night, and during the day they get Innova/Evo dry food.

For example: If your cat is in the doorway wanting to go outside, and you open the door to find it raining, the cat's tail will wag because of internal conflict. The cat wants to go outside, but doesn't want to go into the rain. Once the cat makes a decision and either returns to the house or leaves into the rain, the tail will immediately stop wagging.
