Censorship is a sticky issue with many differing opinions. Some feel that censorship is never fine, but others think that censorship is sometimes needed. Here are some viewpoints on it: No. Censorship should not be pracitced since the free spread of ideas is needed to have a free society. Yes! Censorship should be used wisely but not to completely control society. Censorship helps protect children and those in society. Kiddy porn is disgusting and without Censorship Laws it would be on-going (still is) but they are being caught a lot faster these days as you can see if you watch the news. With media publishing and telecasting trivia censorship is the need of the hour' in all categories?

Even with technology at its peak in the modern era worldwide it is not possible to censor selectively a part of the program being telecasted and leave the other. What needs to be done is to have a common voting between the younger generation and their parents about the possible goods and also ill-effects of foreign channels. On one hand, channels like Discovery,Animal Planet, Star Sports, etc. provide us with the knowledge and entertainment not ever imparted by an Indian channel while on the other hand there are counter-parts like Fashion TV(still can be knowledgeable for fashion freaks) which are quite bad for kids in their developing age. I think the major topic for discussion should be the right age limit for viewing adult content as otherwise children ride onto such stuff at a much earlier age. So, a common forum should be set up between youngsters and elders on what to watch and at what age. Also, some relaxations should be given to the children. As otherwise, you know what happens(Anxiety Kills The CAT). This thing should always be kept in view. Rest aside, children should be let free to exercise and criticised in a very mild way so as not to let them feel that they are being pulled down or something like that. What I wish to convey here is that stop the children in the best manner possible and do not pressurise them at any stage as that can lead to more damage only.
I am done. Thanks a lot.

What is censorship in a community?

Community censorship is where someone asks for help within a commuinty. It comes from the German word "censor", which closely sounds like "send for", and the word ship. It was a common expression for anyone stuck in water to use. They would call out "cenzor ship", meaning "send for a ship".

E.g. In Wikipedia this is where someone asks for help on an article, from another user. The helping user (i.e. the shipper) will then find some way of contacting the user who asked for help, and the two users will work through the article together.

Why do governments use censorship?

Governments use censorship to prevent something from being published or broadcast for reasons of secrecy. For example during war time the government may want to limit some of the information being published to improve the moral of the citizens or to prevent the enemy from getting information from the media. For example there was censorship around the troop build up in England prior to D-Day so that the size and scope fo the operation would remain a mystery to the enemy.

Government can also use censorship to prevent alternate opinions from being broadcast to the population. For example in World War I the US had very harsh censorship laws and prevented anyone from speaking out against that war. This is a double edged source as it subverts democratic principles by not allowing free discussion on issues and could be seen as an abuse of power.

Government can also attempt to censor on moral authority and decide, for example what is fit print and read and what is not. It can be done directly by censoring specific works or put in place legal or voluntary frameworks that effectively censor works. This is another double edge sword that potentially prevents people from accessing material they want to because of "Big Brother" government.

What is book burning?

Book burning has been done for thousands of years right up until just recently and was caused by some religious sects as "not suitable material", to governments abolishing certain unsavory books on the subject of sex, government control, etc., and there were some book burnings during the late 1800s to modern times simply to attract attention for the author of that book (what you can't have you want!) "Burning of the books and burial of the scholars" in 213 BC is counted as the greatest crime of Qin Shi Huang of China. The writer Heinrich Heine famously wrote in 1821 "Where they burn books, they will end in burning human beings." Anthony Comstock's New York Society for the Suppression of Vice inscribed book-burning on its seal, as a worthy goal to be achieved (see illustration). Comstock's total record in a long and influential career is considered to have effected the destruction of about 15 tons of books, 284,000 pounds of plates for printing 'objectionable' books, and nearly 4,000,000 pictures - all of this material defined as "lewd" by Comstock's very broad definition of the term (which he and his associates successfully lobbied the United States Congress to inscribe in the Comstock Law), The Ray Bradbury novel Fahrenheit 451 is about a fictional future society that has institutionalized book burning. In Orwell's 1984, the euphemistically-called "memory hole" is used to burn any book or written text which is inconvenient to the regime, and there is mention of "the total destruction of all books published before 1960". Some of society book burning is a form of control and feel it is a form of censorship also that religious or political leaders practice against those ideas that they oppose. Some of the most recent book burnings are: In 1948, at Binghamton, New York children - overseen by priests, teachers, and parents - publicly burned around 2000 comic books. As part of Stalin's efforts to stamp out Jewish culture in the Soviet Union in the late 1940's and early 1950's, the Judaica collection in the library of Birobidzhan, capital of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast on the Chinese border, was burned. In 1953 Senator Joseph McCarthy recited before his subcommittee and the press a a list of supposedly pro-communist authors whose works his aide Roy Cohn found in State Department libraries in Europe. The State Department bowed to McCarthy and ordered its overseas librarians to remove from their shelves "material by any controversial persons, Communists, fellow travelers, etc. and some were burned. In 1954

Is censorship legal in the US?

Not all forms of censorship are illegal. When private individuals agitate to eliminate TV programs they dislike, or threaten to boycott the companies that support those programs with advertising dollars, they are certainly trying to censor artistic expression and interfere with the free speech of others. But their actions are perfectly legal; in fact, their protests are protected by the First Amendment right to freedom of speech.
