What is Australian censorship?
Censorship in Australia is the banning or control of content "believed" to threaten the political, social or moral order of country.
Ethics and Politics are the main driving forces of Censorship. These two issues are regularly in conflict with other ethics and politics of different people, communities, states and territories. As history has proven, Ethics and Politics of Censorship changes radically and very swiftly throughout the World.
Australian Government imposed Censorship is not always discussed with all or even part of some affected populations or individuals prior to implementation. This is not always seen as a good thing and most believe that some issues concerning basic rights, selective application and segregated Censoring and are being abused, incorrectly or unfairly imposed or overly imposed by the Censors.
However, there a definitely some issues that should be either banned, restricted or more tightly monitored and controlled, and some of these are also Internationally recognised and agreed to in cooperation.
A type of "unsuccessful" censorship example in Australia is yet another recent failed attempt to restrict certain internet sites and content. This was a very costly tax payer funded failure as some of these blocked sites were legitimate businesses or harmless information sites and had nothing to do with any perceived Adult Industry, National Security or perceived illegal activity. Young teenagers easily bypassed this latest internet censoring attempt within minutes.
Censorship is, and always will be one of society's most contentiously discussed topics as it is included in most civilized countries versions of "Freedom of Rights" versus the "Protection of its' People and Country".

I have an answer, kind of. I actually have the same question. I need some good debate material for my 11th grade English class, but am unable to find anything. I also feel sad because you asked your question 10 years ago and it is stale, left unanswered. In my one opinion with brief knowledge of the Enlightenment, the government and church officials probably believed that everything in life could be explained by the bible and that their ancient practices were perfect. I would assume that they felt fear in that people might retaliate, and they would lose power and control of the people. These new ideas about the world probably scared some of the older officials and church elders because new information and practices can sometime be unsettling or even frightening to older and 'wiser' people. And the same is mostly true nowadays, many older people resent change and are very conservative about everything (not just politically speaking either). That's just how it is sometimes. I hope I was able to shed some light on your question. Don't have a good day, have a great day!
