1983 305 CHEVY Truck carb backfire. how to fix?

Start by setting the timing. Make sure it's right before you waste a lot of time on a non-problem.

Next, examine the distributor cap. You shouldn't see any cracks or black "spark traces" anywhere on the inside of the cap. It should be clean, no moisture.

If that's not the cause, check the carburetor's accelerator pump. If that's not functioning right you can get some backfiring.

Check the compression. Sometimes a sticky intake valve can cause trouble.

What could cause a Chevy 305 to foul out the spark plugs?

Needs a new carb. Replace the old one with a new reman. I had the same problem after a batch of bad gas

That is a good possibility, but you should also be on the lookout for weak ignition such as a bad cap and rotor, bad wires, bad coil.

I've also encountered this problem when the valves are not sealing against the seats good. Only solution for that is a valve job.

Is a 1987 305 TBI?

What does a radiator flush do?

Difference between ls1 motor and lt1 motor?

Not to mention the cylinder heads on an LS1 were touched by God.

Can a intake manifold leak on a 91 305 let coolant into the exhaust?

The intake could, but it is real rare because of the distance between the water jacket and the intake runner on that year engine. Most of the time that a intake is leaking coolant it will run into the oil pan and the engine oil will turn white.

Your problem if the engine is steaming white out of the exhaust and over heating is a Bad head gasket or crack in the intake or exhaust valve chamber in the head.

Need to magnaflux the heads for cracks before reinstalling them.

Check them with a stright edge to make sure there not warped too.

Sounds like it was over heated. GOOD LUCK NEUTZ.

How do you get your 305 tpi on tdc and on the compression stroke?

This will take 2 people. Take the #1 plug out, That will be the first plug up front on the drivers side head. Now unhook the coil wire from the coil so it won't start.

Then put your helper in the truck so he can bump the engine over with the key when you tell him. Now put your finger over the #1 plug hole and tell helper to bump the key a little at a time until you feel air blow out from under your finger and then stop blowing. As the piston is moving up and down in the cylinder you will fill it suck on your finger and then start to blow out from under your finger, as soon as it stops blowing out then that will be the compression stroke and top dead center.

It may take a few times of bumping engine over until you get the fill of it and get it right. When it's right the mark on the balancer will be at 0 on the timing mark.

And the distributor rotor will be pointin to the #1 post on the cap and at #1 cylinder.

1989 Chevy van with 305 and there is no vacuum coming from the egr vacuum is good at the throttle body though what could be the cause of this?

There is no vacuum at the nipple on the EGR VALVE.

The Vacuum line that hooks to it should suck your finger when you speed the engine up. That line will come from the TBI ( Throttle Body Injection housing) and hook to the EGR valve, and when the engine RPMs. go up it sucks the EGR VALVE OPEN.

UNDERSTAND.

Why does my newly rebuilt 87 Chevy 305 leak oil out of front and spray it everywhere after a high rpm run and does not drip when idling or off?

Did you put a new crankshaft seal in the front of the timing cover ??

The timing cover could have a hole worn in the left bottom side of it from the old timing chain rubbing against it.

Are the front intake manifold gasket pushed out when you tighten the intake bolts.

If you used the rubber gaskets for the front and rear of the intake that came with the intake gasket set, Then they probley moved on you.

NEVER USE THE RUBBER GASKETS FOR THE FRONT AND REAR OF THE INTAKE.

use high tempture OEM black silacone on the front and rear of the block under the intake ONLY. That is a rule on a V8 Chevy

It could be leaking oil from the front oil pan gasket were the timing cover and oil pan go together. Hope this helps.

When installing a distributor in a 350 chev does should the number 1 piston be on the compression stroke or intake stroke at TDC or does it matter?

#1 should be up for compression. Both valves would be closed. Addendum: The above answer is correct except for one thing; #1 MUST be at the top of the compression stroke if you want the engine to run, and the distributor MUST be pointing at #1 plug wire. Recognize that the distributor will turn slightly as it drops down into the cam gear, so make certain that you accommodate for that. You want the rotor to be pointing to the center of #1 when the distributor is in place.

On a 327 Chevy which groove does the valve stem seal go?

The o ring style seal goes on the lower groove, the valve keeper goes in the top groove.

Any small block head that you want to put on it up to the year 1999.

But any head after 1986 will still bolt right on, But to be able to use a
