What did Christopher Columbus name the first land of the new world spotted?
October 12, 1492
We have spotted land! I have named it San Salvador. I believe that Japan is only a short distance to the west. [Editor's note: Columbus landed in the Bahamas south of Florida. He believed that he was on islands off the coast of Japan.]
There are strange looking people here, very different from my men and me. They wear little clothing and are of a different color. Our giant ships with enormous white sails amaze them. These Indians are not what I expected, and there are no cities of gold like Marco Polo described. [Editor's note: Columbus had actually met members of the Taino tribe, but he believed he was in the Indies. This is why he called them Indians.]
I spotted several of them wearing GOLD! They tell me that islands to the north and south are where the gold will be found, so I ordered my men to set sail for the gold!

Did Christopher Colmbus realize his dream?
Giovanni Griego, alias Christopher Columbus
1485 Giovanni Griego of the family of Colombo Junior is a free lance pirate employed by the king of Portugal. On August 22, he takes part in a piratical attack on Venetian ships off the coast of Portugal. He narrowly escapes death by grabbing an oar and swimming to shore. With the stolen loot he marries a Portuguese lady of royal birth and moves to the island of Madeira near the Canary Islands.
1486 After surviving a horrific hurricane that blew their ship all the way to the island of Santo Domingo in the New World, Alonso Sánchez the pilot and 4 Spanish sailors are shipwrecked on the island of Madeira . . . and they all die in the house of Columbus....He steals the maps and charts showing the location of the New World....Columbus approaches the king of Portugal in order to finance his voyage of "discovery" but the king refuses to meet his demands.
1487 Columbus arrives in Spain and changes his name to Christopher or "Christ bearer." He presents his great idea for the "discovery" of new islands to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.

Where did the wisemen start their journey?
We simply do not know. However, we can make a good guess based on the account in Matthew's gospel.
In Matthew Chapter 2 he writes:
"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
Some interpreters have ignored the first sentence of Matthew's account and have claimed that the wise men ('magi') saw his star "in the east" - meaning that the star was in the eastern sky and so they had to travel from the west to see Jesus. Therefore the claim is that the magi came from Africa. However, we know that the first sentence wasn't added or altered in the original Greek, and so it makes it perfectly clear that the magi themselves came from the east, and they saw the star on their journey from the east.
This makes perfect sense in that the 'star' would appear to move from east to west in the sky because of the earth's rotation as it appeared, then, to guide them to, at first, Jerusalem and then, after being instructed by Herod's advisors, Bethlehem.
We know categorically that the Arabs of this time were excellent astronomers. They named most of the visible stars (star names like Sirius, Aldebaran, Vega and so on are all Arabic) and would have known the major star patterns which would be very much like today's pattern. Therefore, the 'star' must have been rather unusual to cause them to journey for so long. Many think that a conjunction (an apparent coming together in the sky) of the planets Jupiter, Mars and Venus around 2-3BC (which has been confirmed by using modern computer simulations) would be a spectacular and rare enough occurrence (once every 3000 years or so) to warrant the attention of the magi, and to the naked eye these three planets would appear as one very bright 'star'. Considering that Jesus was probably born in 4BC, and working on the journey of the magi to arrive when Jesus was a toddler (as Herod killed all boys 2 years and under to try to rid himself of Jesus) we can get an idea of just how far they must have travelled.
Therefore it is probable that the magi were Arabs, and must have come from no farther than India, and, more likely from the areas occupied by the modern states of Iran or Iraq.

How did christopher Columbus culturally impact the united states?
In 1492 the United States didn't exist and no one knew about North America. As far as impact on the world of his time his impact was very minor if he had any. In his life he was considered a failure. Not only didn't he find a water route to Asia, but he also did not bring home riches, gold, or spices. As far as the crown was concerned he didn't meet the demands of his contract with them. When he died he was broke, sick, and was a disgrace. His son files a suit against the crown to try to claim some of the contract in his father's name after his death.
His current resting place is in the cathedral in Santo Domingo. For more information on the history and the other theories put forward (but proved wrong) about Columbus's burial place, look at the Related Links below.
