How many substances in a cigarettes?

Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals.

At least 50 are known carcinogens (cause cancer in humans) and many are poisonous.

Cigarettes are one of few products which can be sold legally which can harm and even kill you over time if used as intended. There are ongoing lawsuits in the USA which aim to hold tobacco companies responsible for the effects of smoking on the health of long term smokers.

Why cant underage buy cigarettes?

In the US 16-year-olds are not considered adults in the legal system except in very specific circumstances. Although in a few states a person of such age may file a petition to be emancipated, emancipation decrees are rarely granted. A 16-year-old can, in a few states be adjudicated by the court as an adult for committing a serious crime such as murder, arson with intent to kill or injure, kidnapping, and so forth,

What are some cigarette companies?

Gallaher Group PLC is a major British based multinational tobacco company.

British American Tobacco is the world's most international tobacco group, operating in more countries than any other.

DON 'T SMOKE UNLESS YOU ARE SUICIDAL! YOU ARE THROWING YOUR LIFE AND MONEY AWAY! ACTUALLY, IF YOU'RE SMOKING, START WRITING YOURE WILL! THANK YOU.

Four dangerous chemicals in cigarette smoke?

Tobacco containes many chemical substances.

The most commonly known are Nicotine and Tar.

Furthermore we have Formaline.

this of course in addition to Carbonmono and di-oxide (CO) and CO2

In fact if I were to mention all different chemicals that are concidered to be harmfull, then this list would be very long.

Scientists have isolated more than 1000 different substances in cigarettes.

Some even added by the cigarettecompanies in order to enhance the effect of the nicotine.

Nicotine is possibly the one main component that actually (according to research) is not harmfull to the body as such (In small amounts that is).

It might invoke addiction, but an addiction does not always impose danger.

Nicotine is not actually considered having cancerous properties.

It does however num the tiny hairs in our windpipe so that other particles from air and cigarettes have free access to our lungs.

Tar is a compound that is not readily absorbed or dealt with in our body.

Formaline is Ouch. I am sure you have read about butterfly collectors using it to kill off various butterflies, and smokers voluntarily breathe it in :-/

CO2. I just think of the fumes from a car exhaust pipe.

-Regards-

"Formaline" (Formaldehyde), besides being "ouch", is produced NATURALLY by the human body and is used as a food preservation. CO2, carbon dioxide, is exhaled by all animals, including human beings.

Apart from nicotine (and that's also found in potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants and peppers) and some of it's derivatives, all the 'nasty' chemicals present in tobacco smoke are in the food we eat, the water we drink and the 'fresh air' we breathe. Practically all the additives to tobacco are approved food additives.

"It's not the poison, it's the dose of the poison" is the first rule of toxicology. Tobacco smoke is mostly oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide (over 90% for secondhand smoke). All are safe in some doses but are dangerous (and lethal) in others.

Listing the chemicals alone is totally meaningless without their concentrations and citing their uses at exponentially greater doses is deliberately misleading. Here's another totally meaningless and misleading statement example:

Cod liver oil contains vitamin D, one of the most widely used rat poisons in the world! This rat poison is also DELIBERATELY added to fortify some foods.

Are cigarettes bad for your health?

Yes, most definitely!

The main problem with smoking is that it screws up you lungs, eating it would not do that. But still, I wont advise it, at all. Nicotine also, if ingested, causes diarrhea and nausea. Enough nicotine at once can cause death.

Just use a patch if you want to quit or other drugs that your doctor would advise.

If you want to start by eating your cigarettes rather don't start at all or just do what everyone does that smokes, smoke it.

Eating cigarettes can be WAY worse than smoking because you can overdose on nicotine. Nicotine is a poison. If you eat enough cigarettes you can DIE. 2mg of Nicotine, or 2 cigarettes (depending on what kind) is enough to kill someone small, so be careful if you actually decide to eat any cigarettes.

Why do crave cigarettes after you eat?

You'll also find people asking why they crave sugar after they quit smoking cigarettes, cold turkey.

The answer to both: nicotine addiction (like all uppers/stimulants) messes with your blood glucose in the long term. Nicotine raises blood sugar levels.

To further answer your question, nicotine addiction messes with your dopamine/norepinephrine/adrenaline in the long term. Nicotine raises these neurotransmitters, causing increased "energy" and focus.

Digestion takes a lot of energy. When a smoker eats, they begin to feel a heavy blood sugar drop, they become tired, they begin to lose focus, they become irritable and moody. Hence, they "need" a cigarette in order to normalize.

I'll go ahead and cover alcohol and sex.

Cigarettes comprise more than Nicotine and it's psychological/physical effects.

Tobacco also brings oxytocin and MAOI's to the table. Alcohol, like benzodiazepine, works on GABBA, causing neural transmitters to slow down. As an addicted smoker has a body accustomed to a drug that raises many neurotransmitter levels, alcohol has an amplified effect. Thus, smokers smoke a lot when they drink.

Sex (and exercise) releases a slurry of multiple (and seemingly contradicting) hormones and neurotransmitters. Depending on the specific sexual event, time of day, and the genetic makeup of the individual; these neurotransmitters/hormones can vary in levels. To pinpoint why someone smokes after sex would be difficult. They could be "chasing the dragon" (dopamine), needing energy and focus, or require relaxation (maoi/oxytocin). Obviously, it is certainly relative to the body's chemicals.

Hope this better answers your question than "I don't know, I think it's because it makes the caloric content of the food magically disappear".

Why some people use cigarette?

A cigarette is a very dangerous drug. Even though millions of people all over United States use it, no one seems to care. When using a cigarette, you suck it like you are sipping a straw. But you inhale it through your mouth gently. When I see people smoke, they breath out their nose or mouth and smoke comes out.

How do you roll a perfect cigarette with an electric cigarette machine?

Short answer: You don't. The allure of an electronic cigarette machine is that it is super-fast, easy, and fool-proof. This is not so. Most cigarette machines use a spoon-type injector. This includes the little handheld machines as well as the table top hand crank machines. The spoon injector method, with a little practice, makes a beautiful cigarette every time. The electronic machines, however, use an auger bit injector. The problem with the auger bit is that while injecting th tube it grinds the tobacco into what is essentially a fine powder. The resulting cigarette has to be put in the pack upside down so the tobacco does not fall out and when you smoke it the cherry will often fall off when you ash it. If it's speed you're worried about, I would recommend getting one of the hand crank style tabletop machines. You can get a very good one for between $40-60 and with a little practice you will be able to crank out cigarettes just as fast as the electric machines. The only difference is that they will actually be smokeable. I have tried many brands of the hand crank injectors. The best ones are the Top and Super-Matic machines. They are a little more money, but well worth it because they are constructed from quality materials and will not break easily. Stay away from the Gambler machine. They are cheap, but I've owned two of them and both broke within the first week. Hope this helps.

How many people smoke worldwide?

studies show that 5 trilian people smoke in the world that equals out to about 80% people smoke or use tobacco

Okay I made a answers.com account just to point out how WRONG this is, but anyone who knows anything would be able to see that! 5 trilian? First: Its Trillion, two l's not one. Second: 5 Trillion? please tell me you're joking, that about 1000 times the human population. More like 2.4 Billion which is 34% of the people living on Earth. Third: If you were acctually dumb enough to write that on your paper I hope you're teacher gave you a F.

*edit* Changed wright to write.

Changed trillian to trillion.

Does smoking black and milds make your lips black?

It doesn't. That happens to some people due to poor methods of smoking. When you roll a joint, put a filter in it (look up RAW filter tips). You can do the same if you prefer blunts, bluntwraps, cigarillos, etc. I use to smoke alot of those and they turned my lips black, but now thanks to filters they are normal & red.

I also do mostly glass (bongs, steamroller, pipes etc) and joints 2nd. Tobacco isn't healthy like cannabis, so mixing isn't really the best idea all the time, although a bluntwrap here or there won't hurt

How many cigarettes are sold in a day?

About 1 billion per day (in 2006).

According to the USDA, "Output for 2006 was 484.0 billion cigarettes...", but the consumption was 371 billion pieces for the same year. Calculating the number per day from there is simple division; 371 billion cigarettes divided by 365 days equals 1,016,438,356.16 cigarettes per day.

Is smoking cigarettes while taking adderall harmful?

Nicotine is an agonist (a drug that increases the action of a neurotransmitter). It does this by binding to post-synaptic receptors and activates and or increases their effects. In other words, you take some Adderall and it floods your synaptic clefts with various neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine) -- that's what provides you with the change in cognitive and bodily actions and perceptions -- if you are at the same time smoking a cigarette, the nicotine will "open up" and make the receptor sites for these neurotransmitters more effective, allowing more of the neurotransmitters to be transmitted. This offers the same effect as an increased dose of the drug. If an SSRI is added to the mix it will block the deactivation or reuptake of the Adderall-produced neurotransmitters, making the effects both longer lasting as well as more intense. Consult a physician for further information regarding the effects and interactions between the drugs. Answer No physician would ever answer this question "yes." It is never healthy or okay to smoke no matter which medications you are on. The health impact of tobacco use is huge--stop now before you cause damage to your body. If you are unable to quit on your own, see a physician for help. Answer I take Adderall XR. 30mg 3 times daily, I also smoke. It's not healthy but it doesn't affect the Adderall. If it does I would suggest you talk with the prescribing doctor. Answer I was a smoker for 5 years and was (and still am) on Adderall XR 20mg for one year. During the time I was smoking around a pack a week. During that time I found it was a lot easier to smoke. Their were two down sides to this. The first (and most obvious), I was smoking a lot more than normal. The second was that I was a lot more on edge and had a couple of panic attacks. Since I quit smoking I've noticed that I'm a lot less likely to "freak out" and (big suprise) my lungs feel a ton better. Past this I have been unable to find a any research on the side effects of Adderall XR beiing taken with different substances... Answer If you feel a need to smoke while on Adderall, you should ask yourself if you have developed a tolerance to the Adderall that makes it less effective than when you first began taking it. This may well be the cause for your need to smoke. I say this because nicotine has an effect on the brain very similar to that of Adderall. If you have developed a tolerance to Adderall, nicotine can overcome that tolerance by basically giving the Adderall a boost. Unfortunately, if you are using the nicotine to overcome a tolerance you developed to the Adderall, you probably will not be able to quit smoking without your symptoms returning. Therefore, you have four choices: (1) increase the dose of Adderall recognizing that, in time, you will also develop a tolerance to that increased dose; (2) change to another medication; (3) supplement the Adderall with another medication; or (4) remain at your present dose and keep smoking to boost its effectiveness. Answer Dextroamphetamine (the chemical in adderall) is a stimulant, therefore it heightens brain activity and thoughts. Adderall XR is a time release pill. Adderall XR 30mg is actually 15mg for 6 hours and another 15mg for 6 hours. (Approx. four hours to five hours of effect, an hour or two come down, and four to five hours of effect, an hour or two come down.) Since dextroamphetamine goes directly to your liver to be broken down, then through your bloodstream to be sent to your brain, it is in your bloodstream throughout the day (while in effect). Nicotine is also a stimulant, even though it feels like a depressant. It constricts your blood vessels which increase your blood pressure and your heart rate, which gives you a good rush from the Adderall since your body is use to the dose already taken. I've wondered the same thing, and I've researched for months now, and here's my summary in words everyone can understand. It is taking a risk if you have heart problems, or any other cardiovascular troubles. Even though I chain smoke five cigarettes at a time when I'm on amphetamines (I take vyvanse recreationally once a month. Judge me. I don't care.) I'm 16 and enjoying life. Don't be a fool. Research anything before you take it. Be smart.

">Be smart about what you take. Putting my 2cents in. Doctors don't tell you all about what could happen so

read all the instructions you have that comes with the prescription you are

taking. This is no laughing matter I am the kind of person that finds out the

hard way and that is were I went wrong is because now I am suffering from

constant pain that I have no clue what causes it and now in this day and age

its to expensive to go see your doctor just for a regular check up in this

economy. So take this seriously and read the instructions and warnings about what you are taking, and (take notice of what are the side effects) so either take the drugs or take the natural way to getting better it is up to you. I also care about the facts about drugs and medications because this is your life I am talking about everyone is always putting their lives on the line even when it comes to taking something as small as a pill that may seem harmless :) but in the end either you get (good results or bad results) I say if you have a concern about the bad then take this advice and (start taking notice) be smart its you who are in control of your own well being be smart and take this into some kind of consideration.

The myth of smoking during pregnancy being harmful

Wed, 30 Oct 2013 17:51 CDT

In about 1999 I was asked to analyze the data of pregnant women with respect to smoking for a major health insurance company. They were running a campaign to get pregnant women to stop smoking and they expected to find interesting data to support their case.

I used to teach college courses covering the topic. The text books said that smoking causes underweight premature babies. Because of this babies of smoking mothers are more likely to have birth defects. With alcohol, two drinks a day was considered safe, but with tobacco, there was no safe threshold. I thought this was rather strange. You smoke one cigarette while pregnant and you are more likely to have birth defects? Even for a hard core health fanatic that is difficult to believe.

Here is what was found in the data. Babies of smoking mothers average weight was 3232 grams (7.1 lbs.). Babies of non-smoking mothers averaged 3398 grams (7.5 lbs.). That is about a half pound difference and it is statistically significant. Seven pounds is a good healthy birth weight that does not set off any alarms. Babies are considered underweight if they are less than 2270 grams (5 lbs.). 4.5% of smoking mothers babies were underweight and 3.3% of non-smoking mothers babies were underweight. This difference is not significant. There is no indication here of a health risk from smoking based on weight.

The other risk factor is length of term. Normal gestation is 253 days. 4% of smoking mothers did not go to term and 7.8% of non-smoking mothers did not go to term. Smoking mothers did better than non-smoking mothers but the difference was not significant. There was obviously no risk from reduced term for smoking mothers.

Because the non-smoking mothers had heavier babies one would expect more C-Sections from the non-smoking mothers. There were about 20% more. This is significant at the .05 level but not the .01 level so you could argue the significance either way depending on your bias. The data here is limited because only 5% of pregnant women smoked but the trend for smoking mothers was toward less babies retained in the hospital, less C-Sections, insignificantly fewer pre-term deliveries and an insignificant increase in clinically underweight babies.

This data can be explained by assuming that when pregnant women are stressed, they self medicate to relieve the stress. Non-smoking women tend to eat more causing the baby to be larger and more difficult to deliver. This can also cause other problems. Smoking women tend to light up when under stress. This is less harmful to the baby than over-eating. For this reason smoking mothers tended to have better outcomes for baby and mother. They also cost less for the insurance company.

You might be interested in knowing that this information was not used. I was told that the medical insurance business is highly regulated by the government. The company was not allowed to tell the truth about these results even though it was better for the insurance company and for the patients.

I do not think these results suggest that women should start smoking when they get pregnant. I do think it indicates that it is very poor practice to try to get smoking mothers to stop smoking when they get pregnant.

About me

I have a Ph.D. in experimental psychology and have worked in both research and teaching. I am a health nut and do not endorse smoking or care to be around people smoking. I was shocked by these results. My bias if any is certainly against these results. However I think it is horrible to withhold information form people and intentionally give them bad advice to advance a political agenda.

How long do you have to smoke cigarettes before you get lung cancer?

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this. Doctors have discovered it depends on your genes and other environmental factors as to how long before you are at risk.

Some people have a gene that means that they are very much at risk of developing lung cancer. This could mean that only 6 months worth of smoking will seal their fate. Others could smoke for 60 years and still not get it.

Remember that lung cancer can be caused by other things too. Not only smokers get it.

If you think to yourself that you can smoke for a year and then quit and never feel any effects from it - you are kidding yourself!

AnswerAs mentioned above the risk is heavily influenced by numerous environmental and genetic factors in addition to quantity and duration of tobacco exposure.

The risk of getting cancer is stochastic, comparable to asbestos or uranium exposure, however working forwards from carcinogenicity and metabolism data (NNN NNK and NNAL, ignoring side-stream and secondhand smoke), I estimate that ON AVERAGE 30 cigarettes a day for 14 months, 20 cigarettes a day for 22 months, or 10 cigarettes a day for 41 months will produce a lung tumor. Lung cancer has a 85% chance of being fatal within 5 years.

There are a dozen other serious health problems that will occur even at lower dosages, including many other serious cancers. Technically only 0.0000004 cigarettes is considered "safe" to inhale (based on pollution standards). Second-hand smoke appears to be several times as dangerous, so it is likely those "one-in-a-million" smokers who live to see old age have done some serious damage to their friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and even pets.

I calculated this because I was curious about the toxicity of tobacco (looking for a biochemical way to reduce it, found none) after having witnessed the prevalence of cigarettes and cigars in Holland. About 40% of the students in their 20s (in the area where I stayed) were addicted to cigarettes and could not stop despite trying several times (paradoxically, legal cannabis use was 15%-20% and easy to quit). As a general trend, tobacco smokers and bystanders in their parents generation seem to come down with cancer in their 30s and die from it by their 50s. There also seems to be a very high incidence of emphysema even among non-smokers (confirmed, 2nd highest emphysema deaths in the world!).

AnswerSome people can smoke 40 cigarettes a day for 60/70 years & never get cancer. There is no set time frame for when cancer will occur or if you will get cancer. However it does increase your risk significantly of heart disease & lung disease later on in life. Quit smoking for your own good.

There is a very easy way to not get cancer.... ready for this?....... Dont smoke. :)

*******

It ain't quite as simple as that! Just about everything has been linked to one type of cancer or another - sunshine, skimmed milk, full fat milk, paracetamol, talcum powder, alcohol, fluorescent lighting, Vitamin K, caffeine, asbestos, radon gas, owning a colour TV, grapefruit, sex(!).....

Not smoking may significantly significantly reduce the risk but will not eliminate the risk entirely. The IARC (part of the World Health Organisation) lists nearly 1,000 carcinogens.

That's a load of complete and utter tosh. We are lead to believe that smoking causes 90% of lung cancer cases yet the average age of diagnosis of lung cancer is over 70. Whichs means that non-smoking lung cancer victims live to an average age of around 300!

As for the deaths of 'bystanders', of the 100+ studies on second hand smoke and lung cancer, only around 15% have produced statistically significant evidence (not proof). Some have suggested a statistically significant BENEFIT, particularly for children. The increased risk in the carefully cherrypicked studies is alleged to be 25%, which by normal epidemiological standards is effectively zero. And that is for 'spousal' exposure (i.e 24x7 in the home) over a period of decades.

How do your repair cigarette burn holes in shirt?

Snip the burnt area with scissors (just the fibers). Find an area of rug (under a couch or better, in a dark corner)trim an area about the size of the burn and glue the unburned fibers with a household glue to the cleaned burned area. Actually, cut out from your closet a small piece of carpet & pad, get a carpet floor ahdesive from your nearest Home Depot. Use small spatula appy glue on floor,on pad, and set carpet on top it.

How do you down market cigarettes?

You used to be able to get cigarettes from Native Americans tax free, but now that is considered tax evasion. So you should probably go to a nearby state where taxes aren't as high for cigarettes. Also, if you could try a cheaper brand, you might like it. Don't be afraid to try.
