Where did the name peach cobbler come from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The fruit cobbler gets its name from the crispy, buttery crust that is formed when baking which then resembles the cobble-stone streets common to old villages in Europe. Note: In addition to the fruit cobbler, the UK commonly makes a savory cobbler dish, many times made with lamb.

Here is an easy & proven recipe:

Blackberry Cobbler

INGREDIENTS 1 cup butter or margarine, divided 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour* 1/3 cup milk, room temperature 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons sugar

DIRECTIONS In a 10-in. round or oval baking dish, melt 1/2 cup butter; set aside. In a saucepan, heat sugar and water until sugar melts; set aside. Place flour in a mixing bowl; cut in remaining butter until fine crumbs form. Add milk, stirring with a fork until dough leaves sides of bowl. Turn out onto a floured surface; knead three or four times. Roll out to an 11-in. x 9-in. rectangle 1/4 in. thick. Spread berries over dough; sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll up, jelly-roll style. Cut into 1/4-in. thick slices. Carefully lay slices in baking dish over butter. Pour sugar syrup around slices (syrup will be absorbed). Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes. Sprinkle sugar over top and bake 15 minutes more. Serve warm or cold. (*If self-rising flour is not available, use 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour plus 1/4 teaspoon salt and 2-1/4 teaspoons baking powder.)

Can you substitute orange juice for lemon juice in a fruit cobbler?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Lemon juice is much more acidic than orange juice, and contains less natural sugars and less water. If you substitute fresh squeezed lemon juice for orange juice, the result will taste less sweet and much more sour. It's also a real pain to squeeze more than 1/2 c of lemon juice quickly.

So, if the recipe calls for 1 c of orange juice, consider mixing up a weak batch of lemonade (equal parts lemon juice and sugar, plus four times more water than lemon juice.) Alternatively, substituting lemonade from concentrate or out of a container will work just fine. DO NOT substitute lemonade made from powdered drink mixes for orange juice.

Does peach cobbler have to be refrigerated overnight?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because of the high sugar content and acidity of the fruit, you don't have to worry about it going bad when storing fruit cobblers at room temp. Mold is likely to grow first, and even that will take a number of days at room temp. Refrigeration is generally used to maintain freshness and longevity of the food. (ie, a cobbler stored in the fridge will last longer/stay fresher than a cobbler stored at room temp)

Can you use Pillsbury pie crust to make a peach cobbler?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I usually make chicken and dumplings from scratch but today decided to try using pre-made, rolled pie crust instead. Making the dumplings from scratch is both tedious and messy, and I was hoping to find a convenient short cut.

However, in my opinion, the end result using pre-made pie crust was not good. The dumplings were edible, but were very thin, mushy, and had a greasy, slimy texture to them. In short, while making dumplings from scratch is a messy hassle, I'm going back to my old recipe after this little experiment today.
