Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

Does the flu cause you to lose taste and smell?

Influenza, colds, and other viral infections; bacterial upper respiratory infections and sinus infections; and fungal infections can cause this, although it is usually a temporary condition that goes away when the other acute signs of the infection go away. If this sensory loss has persisted beyond that, you should check with a health care professional to find out if you need treatment.

Has the Swine Flu vaccination been properly tested?

Yes, in many studies as well as by experience of the use of the seasonal flu shots made the same way. The Swine Flu vaccine is safe, as safe as vaccinations for any other illness, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Studies prior to the US approval of the vaccines were done by the manufacturers and by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with monitoring by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). All approved the vaccines as safe and effective for use as directed.

The new A-H1N1/09 Pandemic Flu vaccine is being produced just like the regular seasonal flu shot, which has a very high safety record, so there is no reason to expect any different outcomes than we have seen with the seasonal flu shot for decades.

Is a person contagious after Swine Flu treatment?

You would not be contagious DUE TO the swine flu treatment, but you may still be contagious after having treatment, depending on when you were exposed to the virus or when you contracted the swine flu, what the treatment was, and how long it has lasted to date. Usually treatment does not cure the flu, only lessens the symptoms while your body is killing the invading virus. It typically takes your body 7 to 10 days to fight off the flu once infected. If you have the flu, you would be considered no longer contagious after you have gone a full 24 hours without a fever (while taking no fever-reducing medicines).

If by "treatment" you include preventive flu vaccinations, then you would not be contagious from having had the vaccine, since it is made with virus particles that can not make you sick. There is a very rare risk that someone who received the live virus vaccine in the nasal spray vaccination could give the flu to another person, immediately after receiving the nasal spray, if the other person has a malfunctioning immune system, such as with AIDS, but it is unlikely.

What is the biggest flu shot needle in the US?

Usually the regular flu vaccine is given by IM administration which involves a 1 to 1 1/2 inch needle that is 25 gauge.

If you are afraid of injections and needles, there is a new type of flu vaccine that uses a tiny needle 90% smaller than the regular flu shot needles for intramuscular (IM) injections. The new flu vaccination goes between the layers of the skin instead of IM and is called intradermal (ID) with the brand name Fluzone. The related question below gives additional detail on the size of the new ID needles. There is also the intranasal mist that is available to some patients with healthy immune systems.

Here is information about the intradermal micro-injection system and more is in related questions below. ID flu vaccinations offer:

  • Improved acceptance by needle-averse individuals
  • Needle is not readily visible to the patient
  • Needle size 90% smaller than IM needles, 30 gauge vs 25 gauge for IM
  • Needle depth 1.5 mm vs 11/2 inch needle
  • Smaller amount of vaccine solution injected 0.1 mL
  • Less antigen per injection, 27 mcg compared to 45 mcg IM
  • Trials indicate less pain with injections
  • Can cause more local injection site symptoms of mild to moderate redness, swelling, and other site reactions than IM, for 3-7 days
  • Fewer systemic reactions (fever, headaches, muscle aches, etc.)
  • 75% of trial participants were very satisfied
  • 96% of clinicians giving the ID vaccines would recommend

Why does the flu cause emesis?

Flu viruses attack and attach to cells in mucous tissue. This is most often the tissues of the nose, mouth, and eyes where the virus is most often introduced to the body, but it can also include the mucous tissue of the GI tract as well. This can cause nausea and vomiting. Another reason is that the post nasal drip and sputum from the flu that might get swallowed also can cause acid indigestion and vomiting. Some people get it from a gag reflex from thick mucus drainage in their throats or from coughing so hard their abdominal muscles and diaphragm get confused and try to help by triggering vomiting. It doesn't happen in all people or with all types of flu viruses, but some flu viruses, such as the swine flu virus, are known to cause this symptom more than other types of flu.

Should your body ache after getting the flu shot?

I just got my flu shot 2 days ago and I have a round red welt on my arm where they injected the shot. If I touch it, it feels like a severe bruise. On top of that, my arm aches pretty bad from my shoulder down to my elbow, like a sharp shooting pain. From everything I have read on it, I assume it is normal. If it doesn't stop within the next week, I'll call my doctor for advise.

Can you still exercise with a chest infection?

I would not recommend exercising with a chest infection. Cardiovascular strain resulting from a workout can potentially worsen your symptoms. Shortness of breath, mucus production, and dehydration can all increase with a high intensity workout. Take a few days off from your exercise regimen, and give your respiratory system the time it needs to recuperate. If the symptoms persist then you know it is time to see the doctor. Feel better!

Without knowing how long you have been sick, when you were treated and how, there is no way to give you a good answer. How long do flu symptoms last if you're taking Tamiflu?

My son came down withH1N1 this week but the test did not come back for five days in which is to late to use Tamiflu. They recommend using within the first 48 hours of symptoms. If used prior to or within the first 48 hours studies suggest the drug can reduce the amount of time the flu lasts. Test cases indicated a consistent reduction in sick time by 1.8 days compared to the control group. It also suggested a significant reduction in complications. The major side effect of Tamiflu was an upset stomach with vomiting. Hope this helps. (Note: Fever, dry cough, loss of appetite Bed rest and plenty of fluids (force fluids) Seven days later, hopefully it's gone. Watch out for pneumonia !

Did Swine Flu affect travel out of the UK?

Yes it did, i was travelling to Italy for a business meeting during the swine flu outbreak and it took hours to go through security. We had to go through a mini medical check once we got off the plane. At the time of the med check there was only 2 doctors available which wasted a lot of time and me arrive late to my meeting. However many people were found with some type of fever and had been refused entry into the country.

in my opinion, swine flu did affect the UK travellers going outside the country. Im from Birmingham and in my school, our school trip to Spain was canceled due to safety reasons. I heard other schools had similar problem.
