Many different things can cause a mare to not produce colostrum. The most common reasons are illness, hormonal imbalance, and fescue toxicity. Fescue toxicity is the most common and the most preventable reason for lack of colostrum in the mare. Removing a pregnant mare from infected fescue grass is vital to preventing this problem.

Fescue grass also causes problems in joints, and possibly even an abort for a mare. I would make sure that she has plenty of clean water (no mud, algae, etc. in it) and get a few bales of premium hay for the lady. If you suspect fescue toxicity, do not waste time but I would call a vet to check her over well also.

For the most part, horse colostrum is not commercially available. I would suggest checking with your equine veterinarian to see if there is a colostrum bank that you could purchase some from.

Women who just delivered a baby within 14 days produce colostrum. There is no "best" colostrum.

The top killer of all calves is the negligence of people who get an orphaned calf or care for calves that are too slow to get up to suckle is to notprovide colostrum to those calves immediately after birth!! Colostrum is crucial to a calf's survival because a calf has NO immunity of its after birth, only that which it can obtain from its dam's first milk (which is the definition of colostrum!) which contains high amounts of immunoglobins and antibodies which a newborn calf needs within the first 12 hours of life.

Nine months is too early for colostrum. Thin clear yellow or gold fluid is just the beginning of "milk". As the mare approaches foaling the fluid will thicken and turn white to gold in color. Colostrum is thicker than milk but not always a really different color.

foaling...early udder development can be an indication of uterine infection, a miscalculated conception date, late fetal death of the foal or of a twin or a body pregnancy.

Some pony mares will foal toward the early end of gestation (310 days) so 9 months gestation buts her at about 4-6 weeks from a 310 day delivery.

Then it isn't colostrum. This only appears after giving birth. You should probably go see your doctor and find out what you are expressing from your breasts and why. Hope this helps!

Yes, my son is five years old and stoped breast feeding when he was 2 almost three. I recent noticed i had colostrum in my breast. not much but a little. My doctor told me it was normal. Also if you are taking birth control it can also cause your body to produce milk. like the patch.
