How did the town of murfreesboro tn get its name?

a couple by the name of James and sallie murfree maney moved to middle Tennessee in the eighteen teens after sallie's father passed along a war land grant he received from serving with North Carolina in the war.

at some point in their family, someone propositioned they would donate 60 acres of land to a neighboring town if they renamed the town murfreesboro in honor of not only murfreesboro, North Carolina, where the family was from, but in honor of sallie's father. the town agreed, and murfreesboro Tennessee was born.

*the maney/murfree family lived at Oaklands, if that rings a bell.

What color was the Confederate soldiers' uniforms?

Most were all shades of Grey coats on Grey trousers with Grey kepi (artillery units wore Red) or (with mostly cavalry units) Black or Gray felt or straw stag hats , but some of the Zouaves wore Grey or Black coats on either Red or White and Grey stripped "chasseur" trousers with Red or Black fez or beret. The piping color of their collar and the outer stripes on their trousers differed according to the military affilliation, such as, Light Blue for infantry, Yellow for cavalry, Red for artillery, and Black for medical branch.

Some units, however, did not take the correct color for their uniforms, such as the 8th Texas Cavalry, aka Terry's Texas Rangers. They wore Red (artillery) pipped coats and trousers with grey kepis and stag hats, even though they were cavalry.

Early in the war some Confederates wore a butternut colored style uniform.

What was camp life like for the Southern soldiers during the US Civil War?

Just like their Northern counterparts, Southern soldiers spent most of their time while in camp fighting boredom. If they weren't drilling, they were usually doing chores, on picket duty, getting inspected, writing letters, reading old letters, mending uniforms and cleaning weapons, singing, playing games (baseball, wrestling, etc.), gambling, foraging for food, thinking of home, drinking, etc. At night, they slept with only a ground cloth (tarred/rubberized canvas) and a wool blanket to protect them from the elements (they were lucky if they captured a federal shelter half to use). In cold weather, the men would often have to spoon with one another to stay warm. Food varied based on what year it was, what time of year it was, and where you were in regards to your supply line. If you were a private camped outside of Richmond during the Seven Days Battles in 1862, then you probably had full rations. However, if you were a private on his way to Gettysburg in 1863, you would be far ahead of your supplies and would have to forage for food.
