Canis latrans, or coyotes, are also known as the Prairie wolf. They are opportunistic omnivores, both as hunters and scavengers. Sixteen of its 19 subspecies are found in Canada, Mexico and the United States, while the remaining three are found in Central America.

In a word, yes. While they primarily eat small mammals such as prairie dogs, cottontail rabbits, voles, ground squirrels, birds, mice, snakes, deer, lizards, javelinas, and livestock such as cows, sheep and goats, as well as large insects and other large invertebrates, they do shift their hunting techniques in accordance with their prey.
For example, if a human's remains were found as carrion, the coyote would more than likely partake. They've been known to follow human joggers and take small dogs, even while 'on leash'. They will also jump short fences to prey upon domestic cats and smaller dogs. They will commonly work in teams (Gung Ho!) to hunt larger prey, attacking from the rear and flanks. Some of their successful, persistent hunts will last as long as 20 hours or so. Their unsuccessful hunts may last eight hours before they give up.

Will a coyote eat a standard poodle?
Standard Poodles are WONDERFUL dogs! Contrary to what many think, they are also sturdy, strong, and natural hunters... contrary to the normal show ring hair cut they sometimes wear. (A standard poodle is NOT a yappy toy or miniature poodle!) A standard poodle male is (most likely) larger than a coyote and likely as smart or smarter than a wild coyote. (The Standard Poodle is one of the most intelligent of all dog breeds!) However, poodles are are also naturally friendly, curious, and a tamed family pet without the developed instincts of a pack animal. If larger than the coyote, I doubt if a single coyote would attack a standard poodle... and if they did attack, I imagine the poodle would defend himself in a fair fight fairly well. The bigger risk is that they would get to know each other as dogs do... and become somewhat friendly. But once the rest of the coyote pack comes out of the nearby field/woods and sees your dog and decide to attack, your friendly poodle will not realize that the pack is not playing... and he/she will be summarily killed and ripped apart as food for their young. Even if that does not happen, a wild coyote willing to play with a family pet during the day could also be rabid... and just normal "play" could infect your poodle should you dog get scratched or nipped by the coyote. It is best to avoid the potential risk of a family pet "playing" with even a single wild coyote!
No, once they are outside they will revert back to their wild behavior. Being raised by humans would mean that they don't have the skills to survive as a wild bird, but they will try and probably won't make it. If their species is not native to your area, they could freeze or starve in winter. This is not a good idea.

How do you get a coyote to go by you?
coyote attacks are incredibly rare and it can depend on your location. In an undeveloped location, coyotes will usually avoid humans if they come across one, however in developed areas like the outskirts of cities and towns, some coyotes have gotten used to humans. If this is the case, chances are higher that the animal may act aggressively toward you. Generally if you are traveling with other people or perhaps walking your dog, even in developed areas the coyote may avoid you unless he is with a group and actively hunting. Children and smaller family pets would be targeted over a human adult.
In areas where guns are allowed, some people who actively walk hiking trails carry a firearm (in Texas at least). Not to shoot the animal if they come across one, but mostly to frighten it with the extraordinarily loud noise produced by the gunshot. A sturdy walking stick can be handy as well (in lieu of a firearm).
Best thing is to not travel alone and if you do, be at the ready as coyotes are opportunistic hunters and can strike if they feel they can easily gain an advantage.
If you do come across one, a slight change of path may not hurt you. If you see that the animal is becoming aggressive and coming for you, try to stay close to your path so in case you are attacked, you may be easily found should you be able to fight off the animal. In all likelihood, the coyote will pass you by as long as it doesn't perceive you as a threat.
