How do you know if a hermit crab is pregnant?

If you think your hermit crab is pregnant pick it up by the shell and let it slide out the shell a bit and if you have red balls on the side of the crab it is pregnant. Also when they turn gray they are about to hatch. But this is only true if the crab is in the ocean because they can only lay eggs in the ocean.

hermit crabs will more then likely never breed in captivity, so you have nothing to worry about. also, I've noticed, that out of the six that i have randomly chosen, none ended up female, so there is good chance you don't have a female in your tank. course this is just from my experience.

Where does a hermit live?

Is it okay for a hermit crab to eat rope?

Rope would not be nutritious for crabs, although it might not be harmful, but that depends on the type of rope; sisal is more digestible than polypropylene, for example. I advise against feeding rope to any animals. Try feeding them food, instead.

Why do people like horseshoe crabs or dislike horseshoe crabs?

At first a horseshoe crab can look scary, because we associate them with crabs, and they're not like anything we usually encounter. They are completely harmless-although the edges and spikes on their shells can be sharp. They are actually very calm and slow. Their tail is harmless. It's actually a delicate organ for them and loaded with sensors. When horseshoe crabs swim, they steer with their tail. When they are on the beach at the edge of the water, they can get flipped upside-down. They use their tail to flip themselves right side up. Look up how they save the lives of humans every day!

How does a Horseshoe Crab protect itself?

The horseshoe crab protects it's self in the water by burrowing deep into the sand to hide. It also usues it's tail to scare away predators. The shell on top protects the fragile insides, on the underneath of the crab. However, if it is flipped over on it's back, it will use it's telson "tail" by digging it into the sand and flipping itself upright. On land the only way the horseshoe crab can protect itself it by staying right side up. If it is flipped over, it cannot flip itself upright on land, and his body parts will be exposed to predators such as birds, and other land crabs. So if you are walking along a beach and find a horseshoe crab on it's back, give it a hand and flip it over.
It protects itself by removing the horseshoe on its feet and creating a layer of armor around it's body. The horseshoe gets damaged in the process and must be discarded but just like the starfish it can regrow it's horseshoes and once again walk safely on land.

How do you take care of land hermit crabs in captivity?

I had some named Hermie, Charles, and Elizabeth.

Okay..so first....You must have sand and water. Sand so they can crawl and burrow and water so they stay hydrated. You can buy hermit crab food at your local pet store called Hermit Crab Variety Bites. You can also buy them Hermit Crab Cookies for little treats. So, you get them a big enough tank and you fill the bottom with enough sand for them to burrow in..i filled up like 5 inches but they probably dont need that much. Then you buy them a little water dish they can easily crawl in and out of, you dont want to drown them. Be careful to clean out the food they dont eat becuase it will get soggy and mold will grow..they eat that too but it can be harmful if flies lay their eggs in it.

Is moon sand toxic for hermit crabs?

I suggest that you not use it because hermit crabs sand should be soft and moon sand can be clumped together. If the sand is clumped together the hermit crabs can't dig. The sand you choose is optional just make sure it DOESN'T have the following:

make sure it can't be clumped together

Make sure you get enough sand that is able to cover double the crab and its shell.

There is A LOT more things to learn about hermit crabs so do your homework and get as much info as possible!

Also make sure to bathe your crabs, here's how:

1. Fill up a bowl of room temp water( make sure the bowl is big enough to cover the crab fully

2.put 1 crab at a time in the water and let go of them when there at the bottom of the bowl.

3.When u see the crab come out(NOT to where you can see his tushie)(make sure it doesn't come fully out of his shell)so when u see the crab come out(not fully) gently take the crab out of the water and back into the tank
