As long as you've got deep enough substrate for them to cover themselves well you shouldn't disturb a molter. It's perfectly safe for your crab to molt in the main tank. If you are especially worried you can make a small mini-iso by using two open CD cases to form a small box. Push it down in the sand around the crab. Make sure there is a small amount of food and water in there.

Is it safe to put hermit crabs in a bay window during the summer?

NO! It is never safe to have hermit crabs next to a window. The temperature fluctuates too much. In the summer, the sun can come through causing your tank temperature to rise dramatically, possibly baking your crabs. Hermit crabs need a fairly stable environment of 80 degF and 80% humidity. Next to a window, these conditions are hard, if not impossible to maintain.

Yes! It is very important that a hermit crab has a shell, it is used to protect their bodies.

It also saves them from getting eaten by other animals! Though sometimes, you find hermit crabs that haven't found a shell that isn't the right size or shape, and instead of a shell, they might carry things like bottle tops. Usually, hermit crabs try to avoid situations like this but, when they urgently need to change into another shell because their current shell is too small, it will be unavoidable.
