Forensic labs are often called in to identify unknown powders, liquids and pills that may be illicit drugs. There are basically two categories of forensic tests used to analyze drugs and other unknown substances: Presumptive tests (such as color tests) give only an indication of which type of substance is present -- but they can't specifically identify the substance. Confirmatory tests (such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) are more specific and can determine the precise identity of the substance.

William Peterson also known as Gil Grissom, left Crime Scene Investigation after nine long seasons in 2008, but his last episode aired in 2009. His last episode was in the mid-season of season 9 the episode itself was seen as a rite of passage for Lawrence Fishburne. In William Peterson's last episode titled "On the Go" his character offers Fishburne's character a job at the crime lab, starting a new beginning for him and the lab itself. William Peterson left CSI in order to explore more options with his life, he seemed to be stuck in a great job, but was left with the feeling that he wanted to do more. This feeling had hit him a couple years ago as well when he took a sabbatical in season seven of CSI, the showed played it off as Gil Grissom teaching at William's College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The reason William Peterson took that time off was to participate in a Broadway play called, "Talk Radio". All in all William Peterson was a great if not fantastic addition to the cast of CSI.

Is crime scene investigation fake?
No - not at all. Most of the techniques are valid - although often tainted a little for dramatic benefit. I wish that I could have gone to a crime scene and had the DNA results back that afternoon! Also the costs of most of the scientific techniques are prohibitive for everyday crimes. If your house gets burglarized, don't expect the full force of a CSI team to employed to find the bad guy that took your DVD. CSI and similar programs have completely changed victim and jury expectations in the ten years or so since I became a CSI. Sadly we rarely drive from the scene and go to pick up the bad guy! If only we could solve every major crime in 45 minutes - and even get three commercial breaks too! Most of the chemical tests that you see are real - like the use of Luminol; most of the physical tests are real - like blood splatter and bullet trajectories; most of the technologies are real - like machines that sample chemicals or air; .... but the producers invoke some artistic license to make the programmes more interesting and exciting - waiting three weeks is not as much fun as a machine that spits out the right answer in seconds!
