How do you protect yourself against Cyberbullying?
* Any forum can have cyberbullies that will pick on any victim at random. Never give out your full name; address; email address no matter how nice the person appears when you are texting each other. Don't give out any personal information about yourself. If someone does email you with threats then block their email address and if from then on don't open any emails that you don't recognize. If they keep sending you threats under another email address and trick you simply send that email back unanswered or delete it. Stick to very few forums and don't have multiple ones as the more you are on the bigger the chance you may fall victim to cyberbullying. Ignore the cyberbully should you come across one. By answering them back you are simply throwing gasoline on the fire. Cyberbullies will generally grow bored with their victim if they are ignored and move on to someone else. Cyberbullies should be reported to the forum's moderator (if they have one.) Before joining a forum be sure there is a proper moderating system available (not all forums have one) so that you have more protection (someone to go too on that particular forum) like WikiAnswers for example. You get bullied for lots of reasons, because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, because they bully is being bullied and is taking it out on you, they were jealous of you and waiting until a vulnerable time in your life to make their move, they have personality disorders, they have been abused etc etc. I think the biggest that stands out for me is.. Because they can! Which is why everyone needs to get involved and deal wiith the issue. Adult bullies are playground bullies grown up but much more twisted and with much more experience. There are things you can do to deflect people who bully:
- Act more confident. If a person who bullies feels that they don't have any power over you, it takes the 'fun' out of it for them .
- Hang around with friends or an adult at times when you're most in danger of being bullied.
- Don't fight back. It can make the situation worse.
Tell someone you trust, a teacher or adult.
Breaking the silence is the most important part in fighting back against bullying. Keep a diary or notebook and record what happens with the date and time it happens and who by. This will help when you have the courage to tell someone what is happening. Confide in somebody about the problems you are getting. Most schools have anti-bullying guidelines and will take your complaint seriously. If you have one, tell your guidance counselor about who's bullying you and how it's making you feel.

- Bullies will bully you for fun, or to feed their ego. Your feelings aren't important to them. They may enjoy seeing other people upset or hurt.
- If you are getting bullied, ask a close friend or adult to help you.
- If they say something like "you are ugly" or "you are gay" say thanks. This confuses them and they will get bored.
- You need to face up to them (do it in a crowded place if you are scared of violence) and if they keep doing it, tell a teacher, parent or a friend. They can help make it stop.
- Once a bully is identified, don't taunt or ridicule him. This was what he was doing to you, and then you'll be the one doing the wrong. Forgive and forget, and everybody wins.

- If you are unprepared, it is a MUST that you ignore the person. Otherwise, you make sure that you have a recorder and record the event (let the bully do the ranting and if you can, seek a friend that can help you set this up).
- File a report against the said person together with the recorded accounts that you made to the community head or to the school principal or to your superior or to the police and wait for the result (You need to be patient).

You essentially have two choices:
Either stand up and try to deal with it yourself, generally not the best solution or even a good one. As the one being bullied, you are already marked as a target. Attempting to shift the control in the situation to you will be nearly impossible and potentially dangerous.
Or, you can involve adults. This would be your teachers, your parents, etc. This is practically the better solution. Not only can the adults diffuse the situation, they will be able to help you learn to address the specific situation and teach you coping skills as well.
You should tell your parents and then tell them to tell the teacher and then the teachers will supervise you.
If you are being bullied, you can:
Ask the bully to stop, avoid them, or ignore them. If this fails, tell an adult or someone in charge. Do not get violent or yell.
Even when you feel you cannot go on any longer, make sure you do not do anything final. You are loved by your family, friends, neighbours and teachers. Most importantly though, you should love yourself!
There is life at the end of the tunnel here once you stand up and report the bully to an adult.

For example; If you did something that was wrong and someone is blackmailing you, this is cyberbullying and illegal, the person doing the blackmailing is committing a bigger crime ! Once the problem is out in the open the cyber/bully will disappear in most cases and pick on someone else, then you can carry on without any fear.
There are several websites where you can talk/message with a trusted person who will find a way with you to stop the bullying. Use the search engine and type in cyberbullying or bullying. A lot of these help-sites have free phonelines too. Please use them.
Try to ignore the person cyber bullying you. On MSN and several other services, there are block features which prevent them interacting with you and "Report Abuse" buttons or Panic buttons.
All in all, try not to retaliate, otherwise it can make them react worse and you are somewhat to blame.
Bullies will keep on bullying if you keep it quiet and say nothing. This is what they get off on. The quicker you stand up and say something to your parents, teacher or other authority figure the quicker it can be stopped. Yes, you can try to do the things listed here. It doesn't always work though and could make it worse in some circumstances. The important thing is to not give up or despair. Make it known to adults what they are doing to you, no matter what they have threatened you with. Call their bluff and report them, over and over again if need be.
