It depends on the individual dog. In my experience with dalmatians, they will bark at things moving near their homes, but are more apt to play with an intruder than bite one. If you want to be alerted to an intruder, they will tend to do that. If you want it to protect your home from an intruder, that depends on the dog and it's socialization and training.

Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs are trained to find missing people by scent. They may be asked to search for lost hikers, follow a lost child, or search collapsed buildings for survivors, such as the World Trade Center disaster. SAR dogs are trained differently from other tracking dogs. Police dogs are trained to follow the exact path of the person they are pursuing. This is important because evidence may be dropped as the person runs. SAR dogs are usually trained to air scent rather than track.

They search with their heads up to detect the scent of humans in the air, then follow that scent to its source. It is a somewhat less reliable form of scenting than "foot step tracking" done by police dogs, but when it works it finds the missing person faster. If the person has doubled back on themselves a few times, which lost people often do, the SAR dog can skip the extra loops of the track and go right to the person in a straight line. Typically SAR dogs are partnered with a single handler who is specially trained to guide the dog in the search and with whom the dog lives and forms a strong working relationship and bond.

i have one and its very fast but i wouldn't know in measurements. they are a little bit slower than grey hounds because of the way there body is shaped.

I agree. I've had two lab mixes and I just got a new puppy named Mia, a pure chocolate lab. All of them absolutely loved the snow.

Maggie was a lab/border collie mix. She only like the snow, but there was no such thing as too cold when there was snow (she was normally a wuss in cold weather).

Sierra was 50% lab, 25% German shepherd and 25% blue heeler. She loved the snow and rain, but disliked swimming and bathes.

Mia on the other hand, loves ANYTHING related to water. She loves rolling in the snow, digging in it, eating it, loves the rain, loves baths (yes, baths) and loves swimming. She is normally very docile, but get her around any form of water besides her water bowl and she's a psycho maniac. Right now I'm trying to convince her that its not very nice to hop into the shower when I'm using it!

Well it is hard to say. Some dogs have spots from their ancestors. See their ancestors use their spots for camouflage to hunt for food or hide from other animals. This day dogs have spots as a birth mark in away. Some spots are good looking and others should not have them. The dogs this day use their spots the same as their ancestors did back then. I hope this helps you out. I know quite a bit about dogs not alot but somewhat. We raise labs.

When you own a dog, you never really stop training it. Even after a dog gets a command down pat, you still need to practice it with the dog to make sure they remember it.

Training is extremely important, though. It solidifies you as the leader of the dog and creates a strong bond between you and the dog, making your relationship with each other much deeper.

Dalmatians are very intelligent but mature slowly. The key is that dalmatians are very much people dogs, the more time you spend with them and rewarding the good behavior the quicker they will learn.
