If you complain alot about things that don't make sense, or that he never done, it might make it worse...so, the point is, "If your happy with him, he's happy with you." If you are mature, choose your friends carefully then there is no reason a person of the opposite sex can't be your friend without a sexual relationship being involved.

I can come up with two perfectly valid answers.

If my mate asked me for help/support, then I would need more information in order to try to figure things out. "Do you still like her?" could be such a related question. This would not indicate that I fancy her. I just would like to make my friend think about why or why not he should stay with her.
2:
If I knew that my mate was having a relationship with her and this has ended, then this question would be indicating that I actually like her and if it is no problem with my mate, then I would like to try to get to know her better.
In this case, I would give my mate time to try to figure out what he wants to do. If he starts dating another girl, then I would no longer feel obligated to keep/stay my distance.
