Daylight Saving Time

Countries located within the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Alaska, experience periods of constant daylight and constant darkness, known as the midnight sun and polar night, due to the tilt of the Earth's axis.

December 22 is close to the northern hemisphere's winter solstice (December 21), when the Sun is furthest south. At that date the Sun does not rise above the horizon at all latitudes north of the Arctic Circle (approximately 66.5 degrees north). They therefore have zero hours of daylight.

He didn't; he just advocated that people should get up earlier in the summer to make more use of the daylight hours. The idea of daylight saving time, ie changing the time shown on clocks, is generally credited to Englishman William Willett (1856-1915), although New Zealander George Hudson has also been credited with the idea. Willett campaigned long and hard for daylight saving time in Britain, and it was eventually introduced in that country in 1916, primarily to reduce the use of coal during the First World War.

South Africa is 7 hours ahead of eastern time and 10 hours ahead of pacific time. So, if it is 2pm eastern time, it would be 9pm in South Africa. Similarly, if it is 11am pacific time, it would also be 9pm in South Africa.

Eastern Standard Time

As of 2006, Indianapolis now observes Daylight Saving Time every year, so from November to March their time zone is Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5), and from March to November their time zone is Eastern Daylight Saving Time (UTC-4).

There's no Daylight Saving Time in Ecuador.

When clocks are put back, it means that the time was adjusted to an earlier hour. In this case, on July 1st, the time was shifted back by one hour. This adjustment typically occurs during daylight saving time changes.

The sunset time in Indianapolis, IN on May 8, 2010 was at 8:41 PM local time.

Leap year officially was accepted in 45 BC so ruffly (exact years between BC and AD are not known, best guess is 33 years for the age of Christ at death) 2088 years. so if every 4 years there is 1 extra day. Without leap years/days the date today (Dec 15 2010) would be 522 days less than what we accept as the date, or July 8 2009.

See its not December but July. the whole idea behind leap year is to keep us aligned in our seasonal/astronomical date.

I personally think the formula is not exactly correct as it should probably be more like mid November but that's just my theory.

The sun was estimated to set at approximately 6:08 PM in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 4, 2010.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is based on the prime meridian in Greenwich, London and serves as the reference point for time zones around the world. Pacific Standard Time (PST) is 8 hours behind GMT and is used in the western part of North America during standard time. Therefore, when it is noon in GMT, it would be 4 AM in PST.

Frankly, I think there could be no day or year on the sun because one year is how long it takes a planet to revolve around the sun. It takes the sun aproxamitly 25.6 days to rotate on its axis (360 degrees)

The reason was so that afternoons could have more daylight and mornings less daylight. It was first proposed in 1895, and used ever since then. Today about 70 countries practice daylight saving.

Ironically, some of the most beautiful sunsets are caused by air pollution.

Beautiful sunsets also result from the atmosphere refracting the sunlight into different colors which illuminate the clouds and reflect off the sea.

Daylight saving started in Australia in 1917 during World War I, to conserve energy. It was not consistently observed across all states and territories until 1971.

9am Daylight Saving Time is typically equivalent to 1pm GMT. This is because Daylight Saving Time is usually ahead of Greenwich Mean Time by one hour.

The phenomenon occurs due to the Earth's axial tilt, which causes the Sun to rise and set at different points on the horizon throughout the year. In the afternoon, the apparent lengthening of daylight is a result of the Sun setting at a more acute angle, making the daylight hours appear to extend. Conversely, in the morning, the Sun rises at a more obtuse angle, which creates the illusion of shorter daylight hours.

To set the time on the Skyscan atomic clock model 26600, press the "SET" button until the time zone is displayed on the screen. Use the "+" and "-" buttons to adjust the time zone, and press "SET" again. The clock should then synchronize with the atomic time signal and display the correct time.

They're the same length on either side of the date of the equinox, which falls in March and September. In 2009 those dates were 3/20 and 9/22, respectively. Just count days on either side of those dates, to answer our question.

What ends up happening, is that the first 20 days of March will have roughly the same length of daylight as the 20 days AFTER the September equinox (i.e. 9/22 thru 10/11). Similarly, the first twenty days of September will have the quality of daylight shown for the first 20 days after the spring equinox (3/20 thru 4/9)
