Do you gain or loose an hour sleep in the fall time change?

if you go to bed normally at 9 pm and wake up at 6 am, you would get 9 hours of sleep, so if you went to bed at 9 pm and you turn your clock back an hour when it was normally 6 am it changes to 5 am so you lose an hour for thats 8 hours of sleep. gets a bit confusing so I dont know I think you lose an hour in the morning but gain the extra hour in the evening

End: Third Sunday in February "summer schedule", will start on October 19, 2008. Today Folha Online reported that Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has established the third Sunday in October and the third Sunday in February as the starting and closing days for Brazil Daylight Saving Time. In years when the closing Sunday happens to be Carnival Sunday, clocks will only be adusted back on the following Sunday. Brazil Daylight Saving Time 2008/2009 will end on February 15, 2009. The time when clocks are changed is always what is called 0 hora in Brazil, that is, 12 o'clock of the night when that day starts. Brazil

Is it daylight saving or daylight savings?

  1. Time as adjusted to achieve longer evening daylight, especially in summer, by setting the clocks an hour ahead of the standard time.
The artificial moving of clock time relatively to the Earth's time, so that the evenings appear longer at cost of later dawns. It was introduced in the UK during WW2, to reduce the need for artificial light in the working day, and became known as British Summer Time, one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time that is the international meridian time. (In fact that has slipped fractionally thanks to Continental Drift carrying NW Europe, with the British Isles being on the same continental plate, NE at about 20mm/year - 1 metre in 2 centuries! For accurate work a corrected version called Universal Co-ordinated Time is used.) Despite its introduction being over 70 years ago it is still contentious in the UK, partly because of the marked differences in day-lengths and their seasonal differences between the North of Scotland and the South of England. It is also responsible for a very widely-held notion that somehow the two annual changes lose or gain you an hour in bed. The official change-time is at 2am but many change their clocks before going to bed, hence their "loss" or "gain". Most European countries are an hour ahead of GMT during the Winter, so 2 hrs ahead in Summer. NB: the actual daylight lengths do not change - only our references to them.

What countries have daylight savings?

Why don't Arizona and Hawaii participate in Daylight Saving Time?

ArizonaWhen Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966, Arizona tried observing daylight savings for a year and decided to not observe it after much negative reaction. They have never observed daylight savings since.

During daylight saving time (spring through fall), Arizona is on Pacific time. All other months of the year they observe Mountain time. The only exception in Arizona is the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, which does observe Daylight Saving Time.

HawaiiHawaii is closer to the equator and experiences much less variance in daylight than the rest of the country and therefore opts out of observing Daylight Saving Time.

Do you put your clock forward for daylight savings?

In those countries which use Daylight Savings systems, clocks are put forward when the scheme starts and are but back when it ends. A handy way to remember this is "Spring forward, fall back" In Spring, putting the clock forward an hour means that the sun 'appears' to rise and set an hour later than it would do otherwise. It was a device introduced - largely - for agricultural workers. As so few people work on the land nowadays I don't understand why it is maintained, other than custom and practice. it greatly disrupts international trade as some countries use it and others don't.
