Could you use baking soda solution to treat indigestion and a nettle sting?

Apparently you can use baking soda (according to home remedy web sites). I don't know what a nettle string is, but I'm gonna say that you shouldn't eat one.

However, there are generic OTC medications that can treat occasional indigestion cheaply (Walmart has a Zantac generic that is $4/box).

If the indigestion is a regular occurrence, you should see a doctor, because you may have a more serious underlying condition like an ulcer, which is easily treated when small but it could get worse and more difficult to treat.

Why doesn't stomach acid kill helicobacter pylori?

H. pylori is able to survive in stomach acid because it secretes enzymes that neutralize the acid. This mechanism allows H. pylori to make its way to the "safe" area: the protective mucous lining. Once there, the bacterium's spiral shape helps it burrow through the lining.

Why does your body not digest certain foods?

When your food is not digesting it could be a number of things. One in particular, gastroparesis or delayed stomach emptying. This can be further be described as paralysis in the stomach. Your stomach is not breaking down food properly or at all so you experience abdominal pain nausea and vomiting. This condition can be mild or it can severe. With "episodes" lasting for over a week. A stay in the hospital, intravenous fluids and medications for nausea and pain is the result. One thing you can do is change your diet!! Avoid foods that are harder to digest. Things high in fiber, raw vegetables, dairy, fruit with seeds and never eat the peal or potato skins. If you eat meat chop it up fine, avoid foods high in fat or greasy. There are good meal plans out there you can look up. There are medications to help stimulate your digestion talk to your doctor. Another form of therapy if this illness for people who have no relief with diet and medication is a gastric pacemaker. This is an implant device that delivers an electric charge to region where paralysis is present to stimulate the digestive tract. I recently received one and it has worked wonders. The nausea and vomiting has been cut down 80%. I have been in and out of the hospital for 10 years getting down to 72 pounds at one point. Since i received the stimulator in September I have gained 18 pounds and feel great. Getting a diagnosis was tricky I went through several doctors and two years ago I had a test called A Gastric Emptying Study. If you feel all has failed and your sick request this test. And keep on getting tests until you find whats wrong. You deserve a better quality of life.

Why do small droplets of fats get broken down by enzymes more quickly than large droplets?

The smaller droplets of fats get broken down more quickly due to them having a larger surface area.

I'll give you an example. Lets say for some reason you have 1 kilo gram of an evaporating substance which evaporates once it is heated to 80 degrees.

Now have the same amount of this substance but one crushed up into small balls and the other in a large chunk of blob. If you were to both place them in separate pans which reach 80 degrees at the same time, the one with the small balls would evaporate or in your case broken down so to the larger surface area.

How do our bodies break food down into useful nutrients?

Through digestion, we chew the food we eat and we swallow it. Then, it gets to the stomach where it is mixed together with water and other fluids. After that, the food is passed on to the intestine. Nutrients escape through the walls of the intestine into our blood. From there they are carried to all parts of the body. Most food leaves waste that the body cannot use. Some of it goes to the kidneys and turns into urine. The liver also filters out waste. What is left over passes through the large intestine and leaves our body.

What is the function of th salivary glands in digestion?

Salivary glands produce a clear liquid which moistens food as it is being chewed. Without moisture the food is like chewing sand. The glands also produce an enzyme.

Most people, but not all, produce an enzyme called salivary amylase which begins to break down starches/complex carbohydrates before they enter the stomach.

A test to see if you have this enzyme is to hold a piece of bread or rice cake..in your mouth and see if you sense a sweeter taste. If you have salivary amylase, the starch will become sugar in your mouth.
