Where is the thermostat located on a Dodge Avenger?

If you follow the bottom hose on your radiator it will lead you to it. You will have to remove 3 bolts on the thermostat housing to get to it but it should only take you about 20 minutes to change it out.

My car is smoking what could the problem be.?

If it is white smoke, it could be leaking coolant into combustion chamber by a leaking head gasket, cracked block, or warped or cracked cylinder head. If it is black smoke, the engine is running to rich. (too much fuel going into engine). If it is blue smoke, engine is burning oil,(valve seals or rings).

Where is the starter on a 1997 Dodge Avenger?

I replaced the starter on my 96' Avenger. It is located right beside the oil filter. To remove the starter I had to take off the oil filter and the part connecting the oil filter to the car.

How do you change the oil on a Dodge Avenger?

Well if it helps, I have a 1996 2.0L 16 Valve 4 cylinder engine. If you jack the car up in front, and get under it, you should see the oil pan almost directly under the engine, but slightly towards the passenger side. When the pan is located, you should see a screw towards the back and bottom of the pan. Loosen the screw, but have a pan to catch the oil ready. Once the oil starts to run out, keep unscrewing until the screw is all the way removed. Give it a few minutes to drain, then unscrew the oil filter, if you are changing it, and dump it's contents into the dirty oil and then put it in the box of the new one and dispose of it. When the oil is all drained and down to about a drip, wipe off the oil pan's screw and replace it into the back of the oil pan. Then, apply a slight amount of new oil around the rubber gasket of the new oil filter, and install it, appling about 10 to 15 pounds of pressure to it after it is snug. Once the screw is reinstalled and the new filter is in place, you can comense adding the new oil into the engine. Mine takes about 4 quarts, but amount may vary depending on the engine size and the amount of time alloted to the pan to drain. Once you are all done, check the dip stick to ensure you have added the proper amount of oil and watch under the car for a few days to make sure there are no leaks. Hope this helps and if you know of an easy way to change the headlight bulbs, that would be much appricated. daman155

What octane should be used for a Dodge Avenger?

Use 87 You Will Do Just Fine Correct, contrary to the popular myth, the use of a higher octane than required will not increase power or MPG. It is a waste of money.

How do you fix foggy headlights on a 1998 Dodge Avenger?

For foggy or yellowed headlights, there's a new kit out, the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System available at AutoZone or 3mestore.com which works great! The kit sells for only ~$20. Kit contains basically everything you need to do the job and produces amazing results. This one seems to work so well because of the household drill attachment, which many others are just hand sanding which takes forever and does not produce near the same results.

How do you fix dashboard lights in a 1995 Dodge Avenger?

You will have to remove the instrument panel from the dash board. You will more than likely have to remove the the moulding that surronds the panel in order to expose the screws that hold the panel on. When you remove the screws, you should be able to move the panel around a little bit, but there will still be wire harnesses going into the back of the panel. Reach your hand around to the back of the panel and remove the wire harnesses. This can usuall be done by squeezing the side (short side of the rectangle) and pulling gently. After removing the harnesses, you should be able to remove the panel and acces the lights on the back of the unit. Go to your local friendly autoparts store and purchase replacement dash lights. While you are there, pick up a copy of the service manual for your car, such as Chiltons, as they are invaluable when attempting jubs such as these and others yourself....

How do you change the headlights on a 1998 Dodge Avenger?

My daughter just purchased new headlights for her '97 Avenger and I have the same question. The lights have a lip on the bottom that makes it appear impossible to get out without first removing the front bumper assy. If anyone has a less painful way of doing this please chime in!

I had to remove my headlights to polish them, because road dirt and debris had so scarred them, they barely put out any light. To do this, I literally loosened all the surrounding body parts, and wiggled the light assemblies out. Irrespective of that, it was a bear and a half. Good luck with it!

How can you make a 1998 dodge avenger faster?

there are many options depending on what engine your car has.

the most common way to make the 2.5 v6 avenger faster is swapping the engine for a 3.0 Mitsubishi engine.

if you have the I4 engine, then turbo is the way to go. also the 5 speed is faster then the automatic. and if you really want to go crazy the 2g eclipse gsx/gst drive train can be swapped.

as in making all cars faster it comes down to the question of if you want to spend the money to make a slow car fast, or spend your money on buying a fgast car in the first place.

How do you remove the brake rotors on a 1995 Dodge Avenger?

Jack up the car, install jack stands. remove the wheel / tire assembly. Remove the brake caliper from the spindle assembly (probably held on with two bolts). Tie the caliper to the fenderwell with safety wire or a coat hanger, DON'T LET IT HANG BY THE HOSE. Then the rotor should pull right off. If you're going this far, check your brake pads for wear, and perhaps install new pads. Get your rotors turned too. You'll have to compress the piston in the caliper before you can install the new pads. You'll need a C-clamp to compress the piston, and a plastic syringe to remove SOME brake fluid from the reservoir because you're pushing fluid back into the reservoir. Otherwise it will leak all over. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten all hardware to OEM specifications, check for leaks, and you're on your way. Your brakes may feel different for awhile, give it 500 miles for the pads to wear in to the newly finished discs. Just make sure your brake pedal doesn't feel spongy and has firm pressure without going to the floor.

Why might a Dodge Avenger act like it is running out of gas while driving?

Try having the fuel injectors flushed/cleaned or changing the fuel filter. try using premium gas instead of the cheap stuff You could need an idle air control valve or a throttle position sensor. Both are located on the throttle body.

How do you change spark plugs on a 1997 Dodge Avenger 2.5L V6?

You will have to remove the Intake Plenum and disconnect all sensors and vaccuum lines. I did this not too long ago and 3 of the plugs are under it at the back so there's no way to avoid it. Make sure you get a plenum gasket beofre you start because you will need a new one.

1. drain the coolant 2. remove the upper radiator hose -- runs from the top of the radiator to the connection right above the exhaust manifold. 3. remove the two nuts (one each side) that hold this upper connection to the engine head. This "connection" is a water outlet -- silver in color. 4. the thermostat sits inside this connection -- between it and the engine head.

Why would a 1997 Dodge Avenger with a 2.5 V6 and over 120 thousand miles not shift into third gear?

Wont shift?I had this problem befor also it is your transmission sensor....$20 part $40 for install.....have them do it...then you'll get a warantee on it....

ok there are two sensors one is called input shaft sensor and the other is called main output shaft sensor,, there easy to replace . they are plastic sensors on the front of the transmission . best to replace both cause once one goes bad the other isn't far behind.

however if there is anyother tranny problems internally then changing the sensors wont do you any good tho for the most part id say that's is what the case is with what little information you stated

How do you replace the rear wheel bearing on a 1995 Dodge Avenger?

You will need the following tools, 14mm socket and ratchet and or a 14 mm wrench and brass hammer or cheater bar, and a slide hammer axle puller, a midium size c-clamp or caliper compression tool and a torque wrench and finally the torque specification for the fastners on the rear axles, these include the hub to steering knuckle, brake caliper to mounting plate and the wheel lug nut specifications. Well first off on my Avenger the bearing is part of the hub and mounting bracket assembly and can not be purchased except as that assembly for safety reasons the bearing is swaged and then the edges of the bracket are rolled into the bracket assembly and then the bearing preload is set for the hub by an adjustment nut on the rear of the hub( DO NOT ADJUST THIS NUT ), to change the hub assembly was pretty striaght forward, First place the rear of the car on jack stands in a level place and check to see that the car is secure. Next remove the wheel Next remove the brake caliper it is held in place by two 14mm bolts inserted from the rear side. Next compress the claiper either with the c-clamp or the compression tool, set the caliper out of the way and secure it so that it does not hang by the brake hose, if not you might get lucky and nothing happen if you not lucky you will end up replacing the hose also. Next remove and set aside the two brake pads. Next remove and set aside the brake rotor, this should expose the emergency brake , it is not required to remove any of this unit Next remove the four 14 mm bolts from the rear of the suspension knuckle that thread into the back of the hub. the hub and braket assembly is in tight but not pressed in, stall the axle puller and using the slide hammer pull the hub outward. depending on rust the brake backing plate may come off with the hub assembly if it does turn it over and hit the center of the hub a few time with the brass hammer and it will pop out, note if you use a steel hammer and pun over the edge of the hub, you will have a lot of problems getting it off the backing plate. to install reverse the above, insure that you have a torque wrench and tighten all fastners back to factory specifications.
