Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

How do you train an adopted dog to poop outdoors?

Consistency. Feed at regular times, then take the dog outside about 1/2 HR later. Do not allow dog unlimited access to water in the evening, Let the dog have a little drink after it's last walk , then put food and water bowls up , and make sure the toilet is not an available water source. If a dog leaves you a little " surprise " while your out, don't scold it. It will not know why it's in trouble. If you see the dog looking for a spot to go, grab the leash and get outside fast. Praise doggie effusively when it goes while outside, and give a small treat. If you train a dog on newspaper, it will look for newspaper outside unless s/he gets the scent of another dog.

How often should you walk a puppy?

Puppies need a lot of walks to learn proper potty training habits. However, walks do not need to be long because puppies can physically overwhelm their growing bodies. Every two to four hours for a brief walk plus two longer walks per day is typical. Remember exercise isn't only physical. Mental learning will tire out a puppy too.

Why should a person never stare at a strange dog?

This depends on the type of dog. Most smaller, friendlier breeds probably won't do anything except lay there or try to play with you. However, getting in a bigger dog's face and staring it in the eyes is a very bad idea. Keep in mind that a lot of the bigger dogs have been bred to behave and perform certain ways. When you are looking a more aggressive breed in the eyes, you essentially provoking it. Dog's have body language like us, and in "dog body language" looking at someone directly in the eyes is a challenge.

If you are the dog's owner, have raised it for years, and have a positive relationship with the dog the chances of being attacked after getting in its face aren't so likely. But it's better to be safe than sorry.

Can you use rubbing alcohol for wounds on dogs?

See the related question Does rubbing alcohol kill germs? As a Registered Nurse, we use alcohol only for cleansing unbroken skin prior to administering an injection. What commonly is used for wound care is betadine (puchased generically at large retail stores, Walmart, Target, is cheaper). My experience is that alcohol is quite painful to an open wound (but cheaper than betadine). The latter is not painful and my understanding more effective. Betidine is diluted iodine. Note: Finding betadine can sometimes be a pain. Generally for minor scrapes, abrasions, and lacerations hydrogen peroxide will provide the best bang for your buck - as a medium sized bottle can run you as low as 79 cents and easily last you a year. Rubbing alcohol is not recommended for sensitive skin.. or people, but it certainly works - and well. It does have a habit of drying the skin out.

How do i train my two chihuahuas to stop being mean to the new puppy?

Don't pick it up when it is around the big dog (this will encourage dominant behavior). Try spraying the same perfume on yourself and both dogs (to get them to think they are in the same pack). Gently push the little dog onto its side when it is being mean to the big dog and hold it there for a few seconds while acting displeased. Encourage all neutral and good behavior toward the bigger dog with treats and praise. Be patient, ... dog training takes a long time.

Is there anything you can give to your dog to calm him down before taking him to get groomed?

You have this problem too? Yikes. My dog would bite at my dad. Anyways, to calm her down you will need at least two people, some treats, a blanket/towel, and a vet. You will need to ask your vet if tranquilizers will be safe for your dog. If not, then use the other things on the list. If she is aggressive, you will need two people. One to submit her, and one to groom her. To submit your dog, get her to lay down on a table or floor depending on size. Have one person hold her front legs with one hand and her back legs with another hand. The other person who is going to groom should give her some treats before continuing. Oh, and NEVER have a child submit the dog. You're just asking for trouble if you do. Start grooming your dog and keep a towel/blanket under her while you do so. While grooming, be sure to praise her for being calm and scold her for being naughty. NEVER yell at your dog while grooming. She will get all wild and hyper. Just use a calm, steady, low voice to comfort her. Use a firm voice (not a yell) to scold. If you use this method many times, she will not be scared to be groomed anymore.

How many times does a dog get her period?

Female dogs go through a heat cycle, called estrus, every six months.
