Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

How do you train a dog to use the bathroom outside?

Also, keep in mind that a dog will do it's business as far away from it's food and water sources as possible. I've raised 6 or 7 litters of pups in the past 10 years (all large litters of 8 or more pups each). If it was cold and I wasn't able to keep them outside when they were old enough, I always laid newspapers down everywhere in my house where the pups could roam (started doing this as soon as the pups were old enough to get around on their own). Not a pretty sight, but protected my carpets! As the pups grew, they defecated anywhere, but always on the newspaper (because that's all they could see on the floor). As they grew older, they would defecate further and further away from where they ate and slept and generally in one location (on the newspaper). As they traveled further and further away from where they ate and slept, I would take up the newspaper except for the one location where they chose to do their business 99% of the time (accidents always happen). Pretty soon, they all were defecating in only 1 place and only on the newspaper. Not much effort at all for them to learn this. Pretty soon, they were old enough to go outside on their own, and liked it, so no problem training them to go outside to do their business. Helps, too, if you have an older dog or mom/dad to help them learn. With pups, you have to take them outside EVERY time (and as soon as) they wake up, eat, etc. The more often, the better. Their bladders just aren't big enough to hold it for very long! I don't believe in rubbing their noses in it, spanking them, then taking them outside. This seems to teach them it's not OK to poo/pee (not sure they get the not-in-the-house part)! Similar to physically disciplining your dog when it comes home after getting loose...you could actually be teaching your pup that it isn't OK to come home?? Take the pad and place it outside. take the dog outside frequently to use the pad. over time remove the pad.

How do you know dogs see in color?

Scientists have performed colour vision tests on dogs. Jay Neitz, for example, tested the color vision of dogs. Dogs were shown three light panels in a row: Two of the panels were the same color, while the third was different. The dogs' task was to find the one that was different and to press that panel.

Other research has found that dogs colour-sensitive cones in their eyes, but not as many as a human's. Studies have shown that dogs could not differentiate between green, yellow, orange or red. However, dogs are able to differentiate between various shades of blue and violet.

Can you sue homeowners insurance for pitbull attack?

As a responsible owner, you should always assume that everyone is looking for a reason to sue you. And people can and will sue you for ANY reason under ANY circumstance. That does not mean they will win, but you don't want the hassle. Always crate your dog, whether pit or any other breed, when new people enter your house. An ounce of prevention.................

Can pit bulls have spots in their color?

Like a dalmatian? Probably not. But they may have larger spots than dalmatian spots.

Is it bad for a dog to drink urine out of the toilet?

What kind of dog does not bite or bark?

The only kinds of dogs that don't are the stuffed toy dogs.

There are dogs called "barkless", for example the Basenji, but they really do bark, just differently. Barking can be controlled with positive reinforcement training like other obedience skills, and by letting them know by your actions and the focus of your attention, that you are on the job and protecting the house (or car or child or whatever) whenever there is a loud strange sound or other bark-provoking situation.

They will only raise a ruckus if it looks like no one else is minding the store. If you let them think that, you will be turning over the leadership of the pack to them, you will no longer be the alpha dog in charge, and that is a very slippery slope. Keeping yourself looking strong and clearly in charge by your body language and reactions to situations, will also make them relax and behave, knowing you've got it covered.

As for biting, any dog will bite if they are not trained not to, it is a part of puppy play that they need. The play teaches them how hard is too hard during the socialization process (best in first ten weeks of life) with their litter mates and other pack members. If they do not learn this as puppies, then re-training later is more difficult, although a necessary part of any obedience training.

Any time a puppy even touches teeth to human skin, the human should squeal just like another dog would if bitten by the puppy. Watch a mother dog when her puppies bite her ear or pull her tail, she overreacts and they learn that is not something to do, or they learn from her response with her teeth how hard is right for "Gotcha!" play. You should squeal like it really hurts, even if you barely feel it, if teeth touch skin.

Having dogs who behave like you want them to is a result of training, which all companion dogs and dog owners should have. Except in dogs bred specifically for the guarding traits, these behaviors are learned, they are not breed specific.

What happens if a dog eats flour?

Nothing serious. The dog won't eat much of it (it's tasteless) and it is nutritionally sound.

If for some reason the dog did eat a lot of it, it's still not actually poisonous, but you should probably monitor the dog for the next few days. If he's acting (and pooping) normally, then he's probably fine. If he's acting like he's in pain or has difficulties, then take him to see a vet.

Does it make a difference what the dog eats What is the difference between a dogs mouth and a humans?

a dogs mouth is not a far contraction from a human's mouth the dog mouth is more wider and the guy that told you before is wrong the dogs mouth sweats for it that's why a dog doesn't sweat

What is the life cycle of an American pit bull?

The average lifespan of the American Pit Bull Terrier is approximately 12-14 years. Although, I had one live for 17 years though with lots of love & care.

How many times a month should a pit bull puppy be shower?

if its under 6 weeks its not that good to bathe it but it wont hurt it and if it is under 6 weeks you should only bathe it when necessary. If its 8 weeks or older you should bathe it every 2 to 4 unless necessary to do before that. If you bathe a dog to much you can get rid of there natural 'scent' (the scent helps the dogs to identify each other) I bathe my dogs every 10 days and that keeps them smelling good. If the dog is indoors all day and is only outside for like an hour the whole week you don't need to bathe it so often. My dogs are outside more than 6 hours a day (if the weather is good) so therefore i need to wash them more often.

What do dogs do when they are mad?

I assume by "mad" you mean angry, rather than the British use of "mad"-- crazy or insane. If you are asking about anger issues, it depends on the breed. Some dogs will show their teeth and growl to exhibit anger or displeasure. Some will do the dog equivalent of sulking-- they will walk away, head and tail down. Many dogs will exhibit temporary anger or frustration, especially if they don't get their way; but if you distract them and get them involved in a new activity, they will usually move on. (Make sure you don't reward their anger. Wait until they begin acting appropriately and then give them a treat for being appropriate.) Research shows that dogs live in the moment much more than humans do, so what made a dog angry one minute can easily be forgotten the next. If you have a dog that is frequently angry or frustrated, you may need to contact a dog behavior specialist for training techniques to eliminate or minimize those emotions.

How old is a golden retreiver puppy when she goes in her first heat?

Most dogs go into heat twice a year. If you don't plan to breed her, you should get her fixed. Not only will it help her temperment and prevent unwanted puppies, but it will save you the trouble of wrestling a doggie diaper on her every other hour.

What do you do if your dog is choking?

  • When a dog seems to be coughing or choking, you may try stroking him or her on the throat area until there seems to be some relief. If it continues you should take him or her to your local veterinary for exam.
  • Depends on what breed. I own chihuahus's, they are notorious in doing that. Especially right after they drink. This is just the breed and something I have had to get used to. Talk to your vet that is the best place to start.
  • My chihuahua chokes and wheezes pretty often, and I think it may be something called "reverse sneezing".
  • In older dogs, coughing and gagging - almost like coughing up fur balls - could be a sign of congestive heart failure. This is very common in labs and shepherds. Take the dog to the vet and they have medications for that. Be careful though - many medications for congestive heart failure will lead to urinary tract infections and very often a lose of bladder control. If that happens, let your vet know. For accidents on wood floors, carpets, bedding, etc., we strongly recommend Odorzyme at odorzyme.com Especially if bladder control is frequent, you'll want something to clean up the urine but won't ruin your carpet.
  • I have a 13 yo Siberian Husky. He began gagging and coughing very similar to a cat with a hair ball sound and actions about 5 yrs ago. He rarely ever produces anything, but it sounds absolutely awful and I would assume painful. I have had him to 3 different vets, with a couple of answers, that have helped him alot with this issue. The one vet said he may have congestive heart failure, and to give him 1 coated aspirin a day. Another vet suggested it may be an allergy, and to give him 1 benadryl, 2-3 times per day, depending on how bad of a day he is having. He has a very runny nose, and often snorts ad sneezes as well. I have been using both for 5 yrs now. He seems to not have gotten much relief now from the benedryl, so she now suggests 1-3 Chlorpheniramine Maleate. All of these can be bought at most any market or drug store, over the counter. He does really well, as long as I keep him on a good schedule, and make sure he gets his aspirin for sure. It thins the blood, so his heart doesn't have to work so hard. But you have to be careful wih cuts, because it can make them bleed faster and the blood doesn't clot as fast, due to the thinning, so be watchful of any cuts. Should you have any vet emergency, you need to be sure that the vet is made aware you have your dog on aspirin therapy.
  • Okay- there's lots of reasons why - My 3 year old Min Pin has esophagus (not sure on that spelling) - but it's irritation in her esophagus (once again not sure on the spelling) and it makes her gag and choke when it gets bad.
  • I have a lab/rotie/blue healer and she did this. Most of the time she'll just be sneezing or something that sounds like this. But she wasn't sneezing, she was choking. most of the time when dogs do that and there's no other possibility but choking, THEY'RE CHOKING!!!! My dog was choking on a chicken bone that she had gotten off the stove. Just give them mineral oil. It depends on how much they weigh. Also let them eat grass. The oil will give then the runs so keep them outside.
  • As I looked through the above i did not see "HEART WORM" could be an issue. If your dog is NOT given a monthly HEARTWORM pill your dog could have HEARTWORM and it's not a good thing. The Heartworm pill is given to prevent heartworm and people often don't know that. So,if your dog is NOT on heartworm medication be sure to get it asap to avoid this devastating condition which has no easy cure and certainly no cure that is guaranteed. Heartworm is spread through mosquito and you cannot prevent it without a vet's help. So,if your dog is hacking it up and you don't know why but you do know the dog has not been on REGULAR MONTHLY MEDICATION to prevent it please tell your vet so they can do a proper physical and offer help (if you can afford it..it's very costly and like I said, there's no guarantee it works). Telling you from my very difficult loss of a wonderful St Bernard named Sunshine...at 7 she got heart worm infestation and though treated for $1500 ,we had to put her down. Get your dog tested today and see if you can get medication,it's really cheap for a years worth, like $60...and it's well spent. And you'll never go through what I did. Roundworms, whip or hookworms and /or tapeworms can also be a problem and can cause coughing ! Dogs have to be tested to know what worming type medication is needed.Take a stool sample in a (closed) ziplock to your vet from the morning of your apt to set your dog free.

Do female dogs bleed from vulva when in heat?

Virtually all breeds have two oestrus cycles each year. Initially, the vulva swells and within a day there is a clear discharge, which becomes tinged with blood the next day. This discharge increases in intensity and then slowly diminishes, ending after about ten days. During this time the female becomes more alert and urinates frequently, leaving signals of her impending willingness to mate. Ovulation takes place soon after the discharge has stopped. Only now will the female accept mating. Hormonal changes occur regardless of whether a female is pregnant, which is why there is no simple blood or urine tests to confirm impending motherhood.

How old is a 10 week old puppy?

2 to 3 times a day depending on the type of dog and its weight.

How do you housetrain an older shelter dog?

You just train it like any other dog. However puppies are easier to train but it's possible to train a middle age or elderly dog, it just needs more patience. It will take a bit longer for some older dogs but some are just as good at learning new behaviours and tricks as puppies.

How long does it take for a new born puppy to open its eyes?

Puppies are born with their eyelids fused together and are blind. They normally open their eyes at 12 days old. All puppies are born with blue eyes btw! When they first open the eyes should be protected from bright light, they have very limited vision at first and basically can just see light and shadow. They are also born deaf, with ear canals closed. They begin to hear at about 10 days. Actually it takes anywhere from 1-2 weeks for the puppies to open there eye's! Average is about 9 day's old! And there ears will open a few days after the eyes do!

How do you train your dog to not eat a rabbit?

At first, let the dog see the rabbit in it's cage. After the bunny stops running away when the dog comes pick it up and call the dog over to introduce them. If there isn't a tense feeling, you could let he bunny down, supervising carefully. After that, if there was no problem, you can let the bunny out and the dog most likely will be apathetic.

What does it mean when a dog puts his paw on its snout?

A dog may nudge another animal with it's 'snout' because it may want it's attention for any ceritain reason. I'm not entirely sure, in some cases they nip, or lick. My dog nudges my cat purely because it wants the cat to knowledge it's existance. The cat completely ignores him, which then causes him to bark.

---

It is part of their conversation. My German Shorthair, Allie, nudges me when she wants to say something. She has certain sounds and whines for certain things. Whether she says her water dish is empty (she takes me to the kitchen sink and whines) or it is 6pm and time for her supper (takes me to her tupperware container with her food, across the kitchen from her dish) or goes to the turntable cupboard, waits for you to open it, and SHE takes out her quart jar with snacks.

She converses. Does she want to go out? Opens the door to let herself back in. Also, whines at 9pm, time to go to bed. She loves being at my computer area, lays at my feet.

How big should you make a dog house for a great Pyrenees?

From what I've read throughout many articles, research, and online guides; a large or extra large dog house would be suitable for the Pyrenees.

Depending on how big the dog gets, you would want a home large enough for the dog to turn, and lie down. They are most comfortable outside, but will resort to shelter when weather gets cold. Sometimes they will seek shelter during heavy rain.

Extra details:

A great Pyrenees dog typically reaches 30-32 in. tall (to shoulders) for male and 25-30 in. tall for female. The female can weigh up to 85 pounds and the male can possibly grow to be an astounding 150 lbs! On average 100-130 lbs. Of course all dogs are different as all people are different and these are average size ranges.

To make your dog most comfortable do not buy a house too large due to their need for the small space during the cold weather, which is when they utilize their home the most. The house needs to be just enough space to turn, and lie down. They will position themselves to generate the most heat within their space.

Most Dogs typically enjoy their homes if they have to bend their head down to get into the door. This is more safe and secure for them.

Since the great Pyrenees likes to be outdoors in open areas, do not be surprised if the home is only used during rough times. They like wide open spaces. Again, when it gets cold this is when they like to feel warm and secure within their shelter.

To sum it up, every dog is different and your dog should be measured appropriately to find the appropriate size to suit your dogs needs. If your dog is young and not fully grown, but you would like a standard size to purchase for the time being till your dog becomes a full size adult; an average large size house should be acceptable for the first few years.
