Where do dragonflies go at night?
I spotted a very large, 3 to 4 inch dragonfly up in Northern California flying by my window one night around 10:00 P.M. It was flying slowly though - the temperature outside was about 50 degrees in mid July. Elevation was about 5,000 feet.

It may or may not be POSSIBLE to keep a dragonfly as a pet, but I would not advise it. First of all, dragonflies, in general, have a fairly short lifespan. Second dragonflies are quite hard to feed, eating live insects- usually on the wing.
However, raising dragonfly nymphs to adulthood is not only easy but quite fun.

Dragonflies are active all year long in temperate climates. Sometimes they can be seen flying in a circle or a figure-8 and this is called a swarm. They swarm when feeding.
