What is the difference between DW 5000 accelerator pedal and DW 5000 turbo pedal other than the design?

The DW Accelerator pedal decreases the distance between each stroke making it a necessity when speed and sensitivity is needed. The DW Turbo, however, creates a direct relationship between the foot pedal and mallet, creating large, powerful hits.

Why do you muffle drums?

It's purely a matter of taste and or opinion. When a drum is muted is eliminates or controls the amount or presence of overtones increasing the attack and decreasing tone and timbre.

Pr-muffled heads are available to enhance certain positive sounds of the head and drum. (in example, heads that enhance the lows and attack)

A lot of drummers find that using the correct head combination and properly tuning each drum is better than applying muffling.

What sound does a tambourine make?

Is it better to compress drums before or after you record?

It depends. There are positive results possible with both methods. Compressing the drum track after you record allows you to edit for mixing later. (wait until mixing)

Compressing during recording, you will be stuck with the result.

To avoid messing with the other musicians, I compress the drum track being monitored and send the recorded tracks to my DAW.

What is Arin Ilejay's drum setup?

It is not easy to find information on Arin's drum kit. I have seen on a photo of his kit he uses with Avenged Sevenfold and it looks like a Drum Workshop kit, (previously Pork Pie) that consistists of some of the following:

  • 2 x 22" Bass drums
  • 12", 13", 14" Mounted toms
  • 16" and a 18" floor tom
  • 14" x 6 1/2" Snare
  • 3 x Other types of drums (I can't really recognize it on the photo)

Arin uses a range of about 13 x Paiste TRX cymbals. Although at the Rock Am Ring in 2011, and other performances such as UPROAR 2011 he used Zildjian A Customs.

As soon as I have more info, I will update this answer.

Did Lou Pagani ever play drums?

I don't think so, he was always at the piano. He grew up across the street from my grandmother and was over 15 years older than me. He'd always come back and stay with his mom around Christmas for a week or two. When I was 18-22, before I left town, we hung out a lot of nights when he was there because there wasn't much at all to do in that small city. He was a character. He almost got me busted with 2 pounds of weed the way he was carrying on a grocery store right in front of a cop who was in there. :P

But he could have played drums at some point, I really don't know. It's not like I knew him all that well.

I can't find hardly anything about him on the web. I can only find 2 measly quotes about him from Julius Wechter TJB's Marimba player, about him:

"Mike White...I see lots of the guys from the old band, but have absolutely lost touch with many of them. Lou Pagani and Tani Kalish have disappeared. "

"It was me, not Lou Pagani, who played marimba on all the TJB albums. Lou played only piano."

Why does my drumstick have scratches?

When you hit your floor tom your snare drum rings how do you stop the ringing?

This has always been a pressing issue for drummers. Honestly, there really is no way to completely eliminate the buzz from your snares unless you turn them off all together. Whenever I do licks on just my tom-toms, bass drum, and cymbals (not using the snare at all) I always flip of the snares until I need them again. This is the best method. However, if you are moving between the snare and floor tom then I would suggest you get a close friend (preferably another percussionist) to stand several yards away (wherever the audience will be) and tell you if he can hear the snare's buzz. Most of the time the audience can't even recognize the snare buzz. What we hear over the drum set is WAY different than what the audience hears. If it is still an issue for you then, as a last resort, you can tighten the snares all together.
