Dwarf Planet Pluto

A dwarf planet that was the 9th planet from the Sun in our solar system until 2006 when it was determined it did not satisfy the requirements of being a planet.

Does Pluto have volcanoes or geysers?

NASA believes Pluto may have an ice volcano.

What would you experience on Pluto?

Pluto is extremely far so therefore it would take over a decade to get there.

The gravity is probably very strong.Pluto is extremely cold due to how far it is

from the sun. Since Pluto is considered a dwarf planet, life there would be very

difficult. Maybe in a couple decades we might reach the peak of technology and

research Pluto and other planets more thoroughly. Hope this fixed any confusion.

(Note regarding Pluto's gravity: The acceleration of gravity on Pluto's surface

is 0.583 meters/second2. That's 5.94% of its value on Earth's surface.

If you weigh 150pounds on Earth, you will weigh 8pounds 14.7ounces on Pluto.)

What if anything lives on Pluto?

Not that we are aware of. Pluto is too cold to support Earthly forms of life, and has no atmosphere to speak of.

It is possible, in science fiction, to create the sort of life form that could exist on Pluto; SF legend E.E. Smith did, and called them "Palainians". But it will be a LONG time before we can actually see if anything is there.

I don't expect anyone.

What do Pluto mars and mercury have in common?

Pluto Mars and Mercury have the following in common:

  1. They all orbit the Sun
  2. They are all ball-shaped
  3. None of them have any life on them as far as we know

Why did astronomers made the decision to change Pluto status?

Pluto is the second most massive dwarf planet. Initially it was considered 9th planet of our solar system but a debate raged for 75 years over its legitimacy as a planet. Discovery of Eris a much bigger body urged International Astronomical Union to describe in 2006 what a planet is. According to the definition Pluto was stripped of its planetary status.

How Pluto become a dwarf planets?

Beyond the orbit of Neptune, there are uncounted numbers of small icy objects such as Pluto, Sedna, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea. They are similar to both planets and comets and are made largely of frozen gases.

The term "plutoid" is also used to describe these Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs).

How wide is Pluto?

Pluto's diameter is 2374 kilometers. or 1,475 miles. Pluto has about the same amount of land as Russia.

Why do astronomers sometimes not call Pluto a planet?

It is now widely accepted that Pluto should not be classified as a planet, because more bodies more massive than it were discovered beyond its orbit. Also, it seems that it has characteristics similar to other objects in the Kuiper belt.

Is there a breathable atmosphere on Pluto?

No. Gas giants are made primarily of hydrogen and helium. Such an atmosphere could not support enough oxygen for human life, as even if enough could be brought together, it reacts with hydrogen as soon as enough heat is introduced.

How long does it take Pluto to orbit the sun in kilometers?

Well, you can't go to Pluto, on foot, you have to go by rocketship, I would say..... there is ummmmmmm....... 6 month's, I don't know how many km that is so, don't ask me! Thank you.

Why was Pluto reclassified as a dwarf?

Because it was way too small to be a real planet.

Some may be annoyed by my nit-picking. It is not that Pluto was singled out and redefined as a dwarf planet (and by the way it is not Pluto's size that is at issue). A definition of planet was decided upon, and according to the definition Pluto does not meet criteria to be considered a major planet. Pluto has not cleared its neighborhood (the Kuiper Belt) of debris. It may well be that Pluto's then-disputed place among the major planets fueled the need for a definition, but the definition was needed and the current one seems reasonable to most.

Why is Pluto not a regular planet?

It doesn't follow the rules of a planet because there are hundreds like it. Humans didn't know it before because our technology has evoluted since the discovery of space. That is what my science teacher told me.

That is a great answer! and that about wraps it up.

What made the international astronomical union decide to take Pluto off the lit of planets?

I personally do not agree, mainly because then the astrologers who used Pluto as one of their items in their charts will now have to retire from their work.

How long has Pluto been discovered in the solar system?

Pluto was discovered in 1930 by a lucky accident. It was predicted mathematically that there was a planet beyond Neptune. Not knowing this, Clyde W. Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Arizona did a very careful sky survey which turned up Pluto anyway.

How long would it take a rocket to travel from Pluto to the sun?

On January 19, 2006 a space probe was launched and sent to Pluto. It was expected to reach Pluto in 2015. So it would take about 9 years to get to Pluto.

Does Pluto have a weak gravitational pull?

Yes - in fact, anything that has mass will exert a gravitational force (including comparably small objects, like a human being). Pluto's force of gravity is equal to 0.58m/s2, which is about 6% that of the gravity on Earth.

Which planet lies between Pluto and Uranus?

Neptune is the planet that typically lies between Pluto and Uranus. However, during some parts of it's orbit, Pluto will be closer to the sun than Neptune is (i.e. Neptune is no longer between Uranus and Pluto; instead, Pluto is between Uranus and Neptune).

In fact, as of February 11th, 1999, Pluto passed Neptune, thereby making Neptune the furthest planet from the Sun. Neptune will continue to be the further than Pluto until April 5th, 2231.

Why is Pluto not considerred a planet anymore?

In August 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) downgraded the status of Pluto to that of a dwarf planet. It was downgraded because it did not meet the three criteria the IAU uses to define a full-sized planet. Pluto meets all the criteria except one: it hasnâ??t cleared its neighboring region of other objects.

How long would it take to walk 12.5 ks on flat terrain?

It would take approximately 2-3 hours to walk 12.5 kilometers on flat terrain at a moderate pace of about 4-6 km/h. Keep in mind that factors such as individual fitness level and stops along the way can affect the actual time taken.

Why isn't Pluto a terrestrial planet or Jovian planet?

Pluto is not considered a planet because it has not cleared other objects out of its orbit. It has a composition much like that of a comet, consisting of various ices, and so is not a terrestrial planet.
