As far as I know, The Quiet American is reasonably accurate. There are some slight changes from the facts - the bombs mentioned in the book may have gone off in a different sequence. Of course, the characters Fowler, Pyle and Phuong did not historically exist but they could have. The main historical facts about Vietnam at the time are accurate - opium was smoked, the French were the colonial masters, the Cadoists, General The, Viet Minh etc all existed. As regards the Pyle character, while he as such never existed, he could have been any of a number of other CIA characters that arrived when the French lost soon afterwards at Dien Bien Phu. The author, who had spent a few summers in Saigon, used the fictious character to bring out his point about those CIA advisors, even if he placed him in Saigon a few years earlier than the real CIA men.

For a simile, you could use "as silent as a needle through lace" on page 88.

For imagery, you could use "sweet smell of baked bread" on page 202.

If you want to roleplay with humans in a text-based adventure, there are many sites online that do that... a good site that I have used is RPOL (Roleplay Online). See the related link below. There are also software packages that do that if you already have a party. You could also try the Meetup site if you want to play online or meetup with humans. There are meetup groups that do both.

If you want a computer roleplaying game, Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 use official D&D rules (close to them anyways 3 and 3.5 edition DnD rules). Both games offer an online client and many player-hosted worlds are available to play on, the community for both games is very active. There is also DDO which is the actual Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG.

There are also Dnd "style" fantasy games like 'World of Warcraft' or even 'Dungeons and Dragons Stormreach online', but they are very watered down action games basically, not really close to the complexity that DnD offers, but some people like fun and basic fantay-action games so maybe that's what you want.

-Maximum Ride, a series about a family that has the ability to fly, running away and fighting evil, and discovering the truth about themselves.

-Cirque Du Freak, is about Darren Shan, a normal teenager that is turned into a vampire and finds himself in a war between vampires and vampeneeze.

-Pendragon, is a series written in a form of journal from a "traveler" who jumps to different dimensions(including futuristic Earth) and saving them from another "traveler" who is bent on destroying them.

-Artemis Fowl, is about a teenage criminal mastermind who uncovers a race of faries that live below the Earth's surface.

-Rot and Ruin, a novel about a teenager in a zombie-infested world, learning that sometimes humans are more monstrous than zombies.

All of them have action, a bit of romance(not sure about Artemis Fowl), a bit of blood , and time for you to think about the character's situation.
