Is being a farmer more dangerous then being a firefighter?

No. Farming may be a dangerous profession at times, but any emergency personnel (Firefighters, Police Officers, EMT's, Paramedics, etc.) see danger on a more common basis.

There is nothing more dangerous than risking being shot, being exposed to any kind of disease, running out of air in a burning structure, having a burning structure collapse while inside of it, and countless other risks that all emergency workers may come across.

What is the divorce rate for firefighters?

About 75% of all firefighter's marriages end in divorce. The divorce rate for firefighters is 3x higher than the rest of the United States, second only to military.

My husband is a firefighter and we never had any friends that we knew of that were getting divorced until he became a firefighter. At least once every 6 months he comes home to tell me of another guy who is getting divorced because of infidelity/relationship strain and he works for a small department. My marriage was heading down that same path and blew up in my face 1 week before Christmas '08. It is looking like we may be able to work this out but it is very sad that fire departments don't step up and implement programs/groups within each department to help keep these statistics from growing! I for one will not stand for this any longer! We wives of these men are so many times left to blow in the wind with our children. I have struggled for so many years asking my husband have they come up with a support group yet for us wives? His answer is always the same....no no no... We must step up and take control our families! We have the power to save our marriage and the marriage of other brave men and women who choose this as their profession. Get together with other wives start going out to dinner once a month, once you get to know these women this will then have a support group. You can continue to organize get together, activities, reading material that will help yourself and those around thrive as the wife of a firefighter!!

Remember you must be the one to step up and have others follow you!!

What is a fire mark?

At one time in the US, firefighters were paid by the people who had buildings on fire. However, the insurance companies realized it would be better for them if firefighters went right to work on the fire, rather than discussing prices. The insurance companies placed a sign on buildings they insured (called a fire mark) that told firefighters they would be paid by the insurance company if they put a fire out at that building. The fire mark sign was usually the insurance company logo.

Is 48 ys old to old to be a firefighter?

Some of the answer will depend upon what sort of firefighter you mean.

As a retired career (full-time) firefighter, I'll give answering a try.

As far as age, my department had a minimum age of 18. But you would need to be in exceptional physical condition to compete with fire academy trainees half your age. That is a huge hurdle to overcome. You also need to exhibit a high level of intelligence to compete.

A volunteer firefighter is different. I've also been a volunteer firefighter, and while you still need to be in shape, the age of 48 is quite common for them. A lot less is required, simply due to it being either a low-or-no-pay position, with relatively few fire calls. Good luck.

Speaking as a volunteer (on-call) firefighter, I would have to agree with the above: it was somewhat difficult to obtain certification at the age of 50 at the state fire academy, but they wouldn't let me work structure fires without being certified in this state, even though I started in firefighting 35 years ago.

I know smokejumpers who "retired" before they were 40, but there are a few who continue well into their 50s.

What does a fire department connection do?

Fire department connections are actually used in fire sprinkler systems. When any fire occurs water is discharged from the sprinkler heads that have fused, and are discharging water to supress and extinguish the fire. The fire department connection is used by the fire department to add to the water supply to the sprinklers and/or charge the interior hydrant connection withn the building (if any).

Can you safely carry oxygen in car trunk?

For the TEMPORARY transport of portable medical oxygen containers it is permitted. However (in the US) bottled Oxygen is considered an explosive danger (oxygen itself is not explosive but exposed to flame the rapid accelerant nature of oxygen is an explosive reaction). It would be foohardy at best and reckless at worst to make this a regular practice.

In nsw what was the rural fire service originally known as?

The history of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is really a short long one. What do you mean "long short one"? Well, if you'll care to read the rest of the answer...

Australia is the driest continent on the earth, and therefore its no surprise that the high temperatures combine with the other climatic conditions to create ideal conditions for fires to form. Or some crazy guy could just go around lighting fires but more to the point, Australia's climate is mainly responsible.

Being the smart people they are It didn't take the citizens of many rural towns a long time to figure out:

  • Town surrounded by bush.
  • Bush is flammable.
  • Dry, Hot, Windy weather causes fires.
  • Its dry, hot and windy here.
  • Potential fire risk of Bush around town.

Something had to be done.

That something was when the citizens of a small town located in South Western NSW called Berrigan (about 100 km North West of Albury) formed their own fire service to protect the established society that they had created (but mainly so they didn't have a total panic attack when a fire formed).

Not necessarily through the influence of Berrigan, but many other towns around the state began to follow suit. 100 years later, the number of fire brigades that were regularly in operation had risen from a lowly one to a more secure two hundred.

Yet what was strange however was the fact that all of these stations were separate. There was no central organisation to... well... organise them. There were other establishments such as the election of a locally appointed fire control officer and then the formation of the Bush Fire Fighting Fund in 1949. From then on the local councils worked in conjunction with the state government when it came to overseeing operations conducted by the individual rural fire service.

Having councils run their own rural fire brigade wasn't doing anyone any harm, but the lack of a centred source of direction was going to be highlighted in the year of 1994.

It was havoc for firefighters all around NSW that year. 800 bushfires, burning 800,000 hectares of land, 205 homes, 120 injuries and 4 deaths. For the first time different fire agencies combined to fight the fires. Supplies, vehicles and members of any rural fire service were flown to different parts of the state that were in need of the most assistance. Everyone started to realise that the benefits of a uniform system were much in need. A single council overseeing its own RFS couldn't have combatted the disaster on their own. Likewise, another council not under threat could have been put to use a great deal quicker with a core corporation.

And that need was addressed in 1997, when at the beginning of the bushfire season Phil Koperberg was appointed commissioner of the newly established New South Wales Rural Fire Service. A system that could let councils relax knowing that a specialist organisation was out there doing the job for them, with more knowledge, and to a better standard.

So now you know what I mean by "a long short one". The services themselves are old, but the actual RFS is only 14 years old. The services before the RFS were simply named after the town, followed by voluntary brigade.
