"Whedon wanted to give the show a name that indicated movement and power, and felt that "Firefly" had both. This powerful word's relatively insignificant meaning, Whedon felt, added to its allure. He eventually wound up creating the ship in the image of a firefly" ~ Wikipedia

Officially, Firefly was cancelled by FOX due to low ratings. Fans however point out that the series was promoted incorrectly as a action-comedy than a science fiction drama. The series was shown out-of-sequence; the original two-hour pilot for instance wasn't aired until near the end of its run. Episodes were pre-empted by the network's sporting events. After the series was cancelled, Joss Whedon tried to have another network pick it up. When that failed, he then tried to pitch it as a film. That film later became Serenity, which was released in 2005.
In the years that followed, the show has had a steadily growing fanbase, and continues to grow to this day.
