Septic drainfields and an equal sized replacement area should ideally be located in an area that receives little or no surface disturbance. Yes electric fireplace is a great idea for several reasons. I actually got feed up and asked myself the same question, answered it went out and purchased an electric fireplace. Here are the reasons I found it to be a great idea:

1) No need to go out and buy those fire logs or gel fuel

2) No more cleaning, wiping, and wasting time

3) No more worrying about fire hazard

4) Come home after work, click a button; looks like a real fire, heats, and crates the sound. I also have an option of turning any of these on or off.

Dry birch would be better. With any wet wood, you will be using some of the heat value to drive off and evaporate the water. Birch is sort of an average firewood- better than some, worse than some.

Yes, this is a great way to exhaust a single hose portable air conditioner. You would simply need to adapt the hose connections to the front of your fireplace. I have seen an installation where the front of the fireplace was sealed with a piece of plexiglas. The plexiglas had been custom cut to fit the portable AC's fittings.

well if you want to the wood FASTER pine, cedar,manzaneta those burn the fastest but if you want more heat oak is the wood you want but it is harder to start and burn slower so what i do is start the fire with pine or cedar and then add the oak but make sure that the wood is dry that way it burns easier :)
