How do you know if a fish is male or female?

If varies between species, some species finding the gender is easy and some is nearly impossible. Lots of species have a difference in color of the dorsal fin (the fin on the top of the fish). Others will have color variations elsewhere. Some will be bigger than others although this is not very reliable as one can just be older than the other. A sure way to tell the gender is which one lays eggs. Betta Fish are easy to differentiate the genders because of the fins and colors. It really depends on what species of fish you are trying to find the gender of.

Female fish are always bigger than the male fish. The male fish is usually also more attractive.

What led to the collapse of the west coast fishery?

West Coast Fishery

FACTORS THAT LED TO THE COLLAPSE

Overfishing - 1990's; massive yearly catch of salmon; usually young salmon; few adult salmons left

Change in Natural Conditions - environmental changes; warmer water (7⁰C or higher); caused by global warming; Alaska has cooler waters; fish might spawn toward Alaska from B.C.; concluding in the loss of the west coast fishery

Lack of a Salmon Fishing Treaty - Canada wants restrictions on salmon to preserve it (Alaska disagrees saying there is enough salmon); no agreement between USA and Canada (salmon might disappear over that time period)

CHALLENGES FACING THIS FISHERY

First Nations - 1990 Supreme Court decision allowed them to fish for their own food, social and ceremonial purposes

Sport Fishing - want a bigger share of the available salmon; economic argument: bigger economic benefit to catch salmon by a recreational angler than a commercial fishing boat; king of dollar investments over all

Federal Government - helping with the cutback: they buy the commercial fishing licenses and boats; reduces the number of fishers

What is inshore fishery?

The fishery carried out from shore stations in open boats going to sea daily.

Inshore Fisheries is a third generation family owned and operated fish processing and harvesting company. We have in the tumultuous times of today's fishery, diversified into many other areas of the fishery. Once only involved in traditional groundfish species, we are now harvesting silver hake. In addition, we are participating in various government and industry funded surveys.

It has occurred to us many years ago that the fishery is a very unstable and unpredictable business. The future of the fishery looks even more so. We have decided that as a company we will look to other areas of business opportunities. Our five fishing vessels and management team will be available to your company for any situations that may unfold.

Our vessels are seasonally situated in Sambro, Port Mouton and West Pubnico. These vessels are between 45 and 63 feet in length and usually carry a crew of 3 to 5. These vessels are manned by extremely competent and experienced captains and crew. In addition, we have a very experienced and qualified on-shore management team to coordinate any situation that may arise. We understand the rapid response time that your company sometimes demands and it is not lost to us the effect we must undertake to satisfy your needs.

The new interest and development of offshore businesses is an area that we as a company have not taken seriously. It has been to our detriment that we have not realized the huge potential of this fastest growing area of Nova Scotia's economy.

We are looking forward to helping you and your company in the future.

In terms of total tonnage, the Alaskan pollock fishery is far and away the largest commercial fishery on the west coast of the US, landing over 3 billion pounds a year. The Pacific salmon species group is probably second, landing about 885 million pounds in 2007. Among individual salmon species, pink and sockeye are usually the largest. Nearly 500 million pounds of pink salmon were landed in 2007. Pacific cod and and Pacific whiting are next, each landing nearly 500 million pounds per year.

In terms of value, the Pacific salmon fishery is the most valuable. The 885 million pounds of salmon landed in 2007 were worth about $381 million. By contrast, the Alaskan pollock were worth $297 million, even though the total tonnage of pollock was over 3 times the tonnage of salmon.
