Sadly current test in Uganda in cooperation with the Chinese government have been almost entirely futile. This is due to the fish utilising the vast depths of lake victory that can not currently be recreated in captivity.
From what I have been advise by the Ugandan investment authorities chief fisheries and agricultural specialist it is practically impossible. This is also due to the fact that even if one could force the fish to breed in captivity one would have to have the equivalent of Fort Knox at his dispose, as the Nile Perch feed on other fish mainly Tilapia and catfish. These two fish alone eat 50-60% of the commercial RETAIL price.
One would have to raise them in order to feed the Nile perch. My company has started construction of a small fish farm in Uganda.
But the feedback we get back from the scientist here in Uganda is that the technology is just not there yet. If it was possible to breed them a single female can live up to 16yr producing over 16million fry. It is every fish exporter dream to maintain a steady supply of Nile perch because the market value continues to rise both locally and internationally to around $6-7 /kg roughly 3-5 medium size fish.
