What is the average labor cost for taking up laminate floors?

Home Depot charges $1.85 per square foot to remove laminate floors. It really depends on the quality of the people and the quality of the work they do. Location, location, location. I would guess you should be able to get it done for anywhere from 50 cents per square foot up to 1 dollar a square foot for removal. But, it is something that is easily done. You should really consider doing it yourself. It is not hard. Heck, learn the basics, grab a couple of quality tools and install it yourself also.

What carpet glue or adhesive to use to install a stairway carpet with urethane laminated underlay?

Use HSEA by Westech Aerosol. I used that product to glue my carpet to my wall. My friend recommended that product to me when he learned that I got frustrated with the old glue product that I was using. Since then, HSEA is my most preferred adhesive product not only for carpet installation but for other materials as well. It's a spray canister so it's very easy to use. What's good about it is that this adhesive is safe to the environment and health. And even if it does not contain methylene chloride, it maintains it strength and bonds materials permanently. So I highly suggest that you use Westech HSEA to install your carpet in the stairway.

What adhesive to use to install plastic laminate tabletop?

I used Westech Aerosol HSEA when I laminated a countertop in my kitchen. It's the strongest among all the adhesive products I've tried. It's also environmentally friendly and very ease to apply. The bond withstands heat and humidity so it doesn't wear off unlike contact cements or epoxy. Make sure to read the instructions for Westech HSEA before using it to maximize its bonding strength. You can also call their customer service so you don't have to worry if you have problems using it.

You need a level surface so you would want the joints to be done & dry. HOWEVER

you really shouldn't put tile over drywall. Cement board, HardiBacker or green board, but never drywall.

How do you remove oval ring stain left on hardwood floor after picking up area rug?

As wood ages it oxidizes at the surface. We call it Patina when it happened on a fine violin or a piece of furniture, but when you have a ghost image on your floor its not so great.

The area under the rug didn't get the light & oxygen to make it age or oxidize the same as the uncovered area so you usually get a light ghost of the rug and a dark outline around it

.Other than sand & refinish, only time will heal this.

If the surface is more than 25 years old or you don't know whats under there, be careful, could be asbestos or lead in it.

What is the best way to transition carpet to tile?

Some personal opinion here.

I like the look of a nicely finished edge, without metal. There are aluminum trim & transition strips that make a nice fabricated edge, you can see them at any flooring store.

As an old flooring installer in my younger days we were trained to turn & tack transitions and not use the tacky aluminum trim.

Just a personal preference. The turned under carpet takes a bit more craftsmanship, but there is nothing to keep the carpet edge from getting wet when the tile is cleaned.

There is also the option of using a wood transition which can look nice too, all a matter of taste.

The turn & tack I like is possible but much harder if the floor is a concrete slab, but if your installer knows about Z Bar you might have a good guy. it's an old timers trick.

How much carpet is needed to cover a room that is 12ft by 6ft?

12x6=???? sq feet

If they want the answer in Sq Yards divide the square feet answer by 9 to get sq yards..

When carpet is loomed it is physically over 12 feet wide; wider than you need. You will have to pay for the piece you don't need, too. In this example it is cheaper to buy in linear (runnung) yards.

What is the difference between laminate and vinyl flooring?

Laminate is fiber based product that is built up in layers when manufactured. It is durable, but does not like water. If water is left on a laminate floor it will eventually get into the fibers and swell them causing an imperfection. Laminate floors are usually snap together types. Some need professional installation and some are do-it-yourself. They come in a variety of finishes but most are wood grain.

Vinyl is a whole lot more durable than laminate. Most vinyl floors are continuous products, meaning they come in rolls and are cut to size. There are tiles, like self stick or VCT. Self stick tiles are not very durable and don't look very professional. VCT is the other extreme. It is extremely durable, but is used mainly in commercial settings since it needs almost constant maintenance. You find VCT in grocery stores or anywhere that gets alot of traffic. It should be waxed on a regular basis. Vinyl for the home is a good product. It is impervious to water and is not difficult to put down.

The biggest downside to both of these products is damage. If either of them get damaged, you will most likely have to replace the entire floor to get rid of it since it is impossible to just pop out the damaged area and replace it like a ceramic tile.

Edit - tile is very difficult to replace as well without cracking the rest of the floor.

Vinyl is flexible, so it can still work if you're floor isn't even whereas laminate is a floating floor and does not work very well if your floor is uneven.
