How do you clean cork flooring?

It really depends on what you are trying to clean from your cork flooring. For a more detailed answer, tailored to your specific needs, you can email me at rickydoesfloors@yahoo.com. Please include the specifics. If you don't want to do that, generally, use a mild soapy water, but don't get it too wet. Do not saturate and do not scrub real hard, you'll just ruin your floor much more than your bothersome stain. Be careful when using chemicals, especially if you don't know what the floor was installed with. More on this:

There are a number of products available which are meant to clean wood or hard surface flooring. BonaKemi (www.bonakemi.com) makes excellent cleaning products for flooring. The method of cleaning here would be to lightly mist the cleaner onto an area of your floor, then follow-up with a microfiber mop. With any wood floor (cork included) you must avoid using excessive amounts of moisture as this can ruin your floor. Lightly damp mopping after vacuuming about once a week will keep your floor in great shape. Make sure that you do not use the beater bar on a vacuum, but a regular bristle ended attachment will suffice. Another in home way to clean floors is by using a vinegar solution. You will want to mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 1 gallon of water. Then use the same method as other cleaners, lightly mist over small areas and follow up with a microfiber mop. This is a good solution if you run out of cleaner, but the quantity you need to make to ensure to solution is right and storage can be a pain - so I prefer to suggest Bona's products over this in-home mixture.

How do you remove grout from slate tile face?

A wirebrush drill bit will work as a last resort. It is very tedious, very messy, and very time consuming - but it gets the job done.

ANSWER:

There is a product called grout release which you should be able to find at Home Depot. Slate should always be sealed before you grout to avoid this problem, but very few salespeople warn you about this.

I think the wire brush drill bit may scratch the stone. Might want to try a scrub-buster first after you soak the area with grout release to soften up the grout bits. Have someone go behind you to power vac up the bits so they don't reattach to the stone. When you are done seal the stone with a professional stone sealer.

How do you grout tiles?

It is somewhat painstaking.

There is a grout removal tool available at most big box hardware stores. It is basically a handsaw that uses hardened aggregate applied to the blade instead of teeth.

You have to shave each joint down to a level below the surface that a new grout can be applied to and adhere (about 1/8" for non-sanded grout and 1/4" for sanded grout).

If you are changing grout colors, you will want to use an acid (muriatic acid) to wash down the joint edges to remove any small amounts of the old grout at the surface edge that remain, prior to new grout installation.

Because you are not installing the new grout to the full tile depth, it is advisable to use a latex additive to prevent cracking.

What is the best type of flooring material to put in a kitchen?

Okay, you don't know me from a hole in the wall.
But I obviously don't have anything to gain or lose from this advice so you might want to listen.

I've renovated about a thousand kitchens.
...AND I cook, so I know my way around the kitchen.

Go with linoleum.

Ceramic tile will last longer but it doesn't clean easy and it stains.
Any sort of organic, like wood bamboo or cork are susceptible to moisture and stains.
I don't care what the salesman told you, those laminates like Pergo will only last 5 years.
(if you're lucky and very clean)

Go with VCT (vinyl composite tile) over a new sub-floor
or good old fashioned linoleum.
Not the "self-sticking" tiles, the heavy sheet stuff.
...and get a pro to install it, it's worth the expense because it will last forever.
You get what you pay for.

How do you mop untreated hardwood floors?

A lot of people do not realize how important it is to maintain their hardwood floors. Even worse, they don't know that hardwood floors need to be handled in a different manner than tile, or any other surface. The key is to use the least amount of moisture as possible. As well, products that won't scratch or wear away at the wood are a must. Try using a lightly dampened cloth and cleaning in the direction of the wood grain. In cases in which you simply wish to remove dirt, a vacuum with hardwood setting would be best.

Couple of Easy ways to find out

Run a short ad in Craigslist so you will know the cheapest price.

Then call the local Home Depot or Lowes & ask what they charge if you buy your tile from them. That will be the highest price in the market.

Now you would have a good range & then its time to look for quality & references. A steal on tile or a great price on labor, can be VERY COSTLY if you give the job to a butcher.

You will find that someone on the low end at about $2 per sq ft & that the depot will be $6-8 bucks a foot after they do all the add ins.

Get it in writing. Never pay for it all upfront.

How do you get sticky pickle juice off tile floor?

So I've been in your position and maybe worse. I dropped a jar of pickles one night while drinking... I thought just clean up the broken glass and I get the rest in the morning. After mopping 7 times with swiffer wet pads, mop and glow, white vinigar, then steamop, each several times I decided bleach was my only option . So on hands and knees I scrubbed the floor with kitchen cleaner with bleach. Wish I had a better solution but i don't if you do tell me. I love pickles and drinking so this is bound to happen again.
