Because floppy drives (like CD-ROM drives) are very inexpensive. It will cost you $10 at the high end for a brand new floppy drive, just asking a technician to look at your floppy drive could cost more than that.

There is no such thing. Windows can only read floppy disks that are in good condition and have a file system it supports, namely FAT12 or FAT16.

Floppy disks cannot be downloaded; they are physical devices. The data on them, however, can be downloaded, just like any other file.

Sometimes the metal piece at the bottom is stuck. Try sliding it and snapping it. Also try it on another computer. Go to explorer and open drive A. If you get the same message, try to gently remove the metal piece and read it again. Tried that. Still no success. How can four floppies, out of two dozen, suddenly say "not formatted". No magnets near by. Need advise. Can data be saved? read? Help.

the disadvantage is you cannot hold as much memory on a floppy as a CD or if your into music,gaming,etc.. then you defiently wanna use CD has more space can hold bigger more graphic files then any floppy could that's my opinion on the situation but Floppys don't break easily you don't have to worry about them getting scratched

At the present time (2012) it is not sensible unless the software is under 1.4 MB.

In the past, AOL sent out thousands of floppy's in the mail

In fact, you could argue that the disk is already full when you originally buy it. Each bit is set... albeit to values to mean that nothing is contained. Whenever you 'write' to disk you are replacing the previous bit values to new ones.
